If you want to use an npn, connect the 9v supply to the top of the collector resistor and the ground to the bottom of the emitter resistor/cap.  Orient the 47u bypass cap so that the + side is connected to the emitter.

EDIT: Let me restate it-

The rail from the top of the "level" pot to the 470k base resistor (R2) - disconnect that from ground and connect it 9v

The rail from the bottom of the 10k trimmer, the bottom of the 47u bypass cap, and the bottom of the 100k trimmer- disconnect it from 9v and connect it to ground. Reverse the 47u so its "+" lead is connected to the emitter and its "-" lead is connected to ground.

Doug-

Setup this way with an NPN, would this still be negative ground for use with a boss type AC adaptor?
