anybody know where i can pick up an LM3886? mouser doesn't stock them, and i haven't found any other place on the internet that has them.

Because it doesn't exist.  You need a LM386.
Passive sucks.

It does too exist.  The LM3886 is a 50w/68w poweramp chip.  You can get it at partsexpress.com  Or, order an entire kit from Brian at chipamp.com  I personally suggest the latter unless you are making your own PCB.  Perfboard lm3886s have worked in the past, but not easily.  You'll want to talk to RDV about that lol.

You can get LM3886s from Digikey as well.

come on, people. let's tell him what he REALLY wants to hear...  ;)

Futurlec stocks them, and they are damn cheap. They also stock CA3080, PT2399, and NE571, all of which are somewhat tougher to find chips needed for projects around here.

Or..... you could trade them with me. I have two new LM3886s and I can't easily get my hands on j201s.
PM if interested.

I thought I saw a post here a little while ago about this chip and a PCB ... I for one am very interested in building one of these.

chipamp.com supplies the whole kit with PCB and components for both the power supply board and amp board.

http://ssguitar.thatraymond.com is a place where you can direct your questions about this type of thing.

thanks guys.

i was thinking about buying one from chipamp.com, but i'm doing this for a science fair project, and the one stipulation my teacher gave me was "no kits", and they're pretty expensive. i wish i could trade with you Toney, but i don't have any extra J201's lying around, or else i'd take you up on your offer.

Just take that schem from GGG and perf up an amp. I did. So can you. And you can benefit from my mistakes! The thing you have to remember is to bypass the supply rails(with ceramic .01µF) very close to the chip, other than that it's dead easy as long you have some understanding of bi-polar power supplies.

Here's a little pic of a completed perfed chipamp.

The preamp is above the amp part in the control cavity of the Dean Markley K-20 I built it in.
