Pots and Trim pot questions

I have a few questions about POTS.
First, I'm building a tube screamer clone and am suppling all my own parts.  I was looking at pots on small bear and noticed that they don't have values associated with most of the pots.  Should I get them from someplace else, or am I missing something?  Plus would I want to get audio or linnear and why?

Second, I'm building a wah pedal, but as a set wah and not as a rocker pedal and I was wondering if I could just use a regular pot as instead of a Wah Pot?  Could I just use the same value?

And Lastly, if there are trim pots in a project I'm following could I substitute those with regular pots of the same value?

Any help would be greatly appreciate.

Click on the link to the pots on the stock list and there should be a drop-down list of all the available values.

Use Linear Taper pots for the Tone and Level controls and Audio Taper (Log) for the Drive control.

I'm sure you could use a normal pot for a set level wah.

I'm sure you could use normal pots instead of trims, but why would you? Theres normal only ones "Sweet Spot" in pedals using trims, and the rest of the settings don't sound nearly as good I'm sure.

wow, boy do I feel dumb now.  The worst part about it is I did click on the link and I just didn't see the dropdown for the value, even though it was right in front of me.  Thanks for all the info, very helpful.

I like to use a "real pot" for the resonace control which is the 33k resistor on most wah schematics.
Dialing in a sharp filter and then sometimes backing it off is real handy to have on the top of the pedal...
with out taking off the back and fiddling with a trim pot. Although I didn't want to use more than one knob on this one...

Here's what mine looks like. It's the Colorsound inductorless wah

You could always try and mount the trim so that you can adjust it through the enclosure with a screwdriver.

That's what one of the trim pots was that I wanted to use a pot for, I definately think I'm going to have to try that.  Nice looking pedal.

That seems like a little too much of a hassle to me, I thnk that putting a pot on the outside would work a little bit better, but maybe that's just me.

I havn't built anything with trims yet so I've never tried. I'm a bit afraid of biasing   :(

crowsmith8

I've never had to do any biasing when I've built pedals with trimpots.  I'm pretty new to this stuff so I not too sure about biasing.  So would I have to do biasing if I were to replace a trimpot with a  regular pot?  I wouldn't think I would have too, but now I'm not sure.

John Lyons

Biasing is usually the trimmer or resistor to ground connected to a transitor. This sets the operating level of the transitor.
Some circuits are very sensitive to it.

If you replace a trim pot with a full size pot there is nothing else yo need to do.
