Wah Inductor questions

In a wah I'm building there is a mod option to choose between two inductors or to run them in series.  Are there different types of inductors?  What are the different types?  What would you guys recommend?  Would I want two different inductors for this mod?  As you can probably tell I don't know anything about inductors, so pretty much any information about them would be helpful.  Thanks.

Search the forum for "fulltone Halo" "Red Fasel" "Yellow Fasel" "Arielfx Halo" "Castledine Halo"

All sound different.

Aron sells both Fasels.  Many like the yellow one.

Fulltones are expensive and not much left for public.

Arielfx is my Favorite.  ;)

Area51 sells an inductor, but i haven't heard it was that good, only from a few people.  And there is a long wait or something.

Depends on your ears, music taste, and the rest of your circuit.

search entry "Wah Mods" should bring up a host of texts and links to more.
Stuart Castledine, Paul Morassy...theres plenty of authors of Wah Pages, depicting ... every aspect of the circuit.
The inductors two contacts make it easy and inexpensive to switch inductors, mounting and fitting them both in one standard wah case is another matter...
Aron sell the Yellow Fasel [check], that's what I have in mine.
Area 51 mod ... pop in your case kit IIUCorrectly is a popular one.

Thanks for the info I'll look into all of this.

One last question, probably simple, but I'll ask anyway.  And this is probably just because I am a newbie, but in the PCB I have the inductors are shown having 4 joints to solder.  If I get a Fassel inductors that have only two legs would I only need to attach one of the top joints and one of the bottom joints of this layout?  Does that make any sense, or am I being unclear?

John Lyons

The top and bottom pins of the inductors are tied together on the schematic above. If you only had 2 pins then yes, just connect one to the top and one to the bottom...  hey probably used 4 pins above just to make the thing more stable from vibration on the cicrcuit board. SO is doen't wiggle around as much.

discussed in the above thread.

I modded my Vox to switch between three inductors. Fulltone, TDK, & Yellow Fasel. Use DPDT switches.

LoudGreg,
Thanks that link to the other thread was just what I was looking for.  I think I'm going to go with the Yellow and Red Fasels.  Thanks.

i've heard that  you can stick a thin piece of "fridge" magnet to an inductor to make it sound better..more asymetrical??!! several people reported that there was indeed a difference in tone...can't hurt to try it if your considering buying a new one... ;D
then you'll be a bonafide member of the mickey mouse club! :icon_lol:

I've tried the refrigerator magnet trick. I'm not really sure that I can hear any difference in the sound quality.  :icon_confused:

Must have been the wrong inductors, I tried the magnet trick [or wrong magnet] on a couple inductors, I couldn't tell the difference in sound with non-blindfolded, A/B tests.

i think it would probably just change the Q slightly wouldn't it?

Some people for whatever reason can't hear a difference in Q changes. I don't know why.  I always read the posts where someone says, "i put a 100k in place of the stock 33k and i can't really hear a difference"  Going from 33k to 36k is a huge difference for me. LOL

Your very welcome. With all the help I've received from this site it's the least I can do. You won't go wrong by going with the fasels.

I'm putting a red one into my 535Q.

Fulltones are expensive and not much left for public.

Banzai still has some available, rather expesive though...but they are the best IMHO.

The Banzai inductor is also quite good, yet different sounding.

I have them both in my wah, selectable through a DPDT.

With variable mids and resonance i always get what i Wahnt...

LoudGreg

Hmmm very Interesting.   Do you have a link to Banzai ? I don't know them at all. I also think the Fulltone is the best I've tried. The Red Fasel is similar but I would pay the extra $$ for a Fulltone Inductor.

Yea...that 33k thing I turned into a 100k pot, could tell no/extremely little difference from [the 33k stop resistor] one end of the range to the other...until I got an inductor in there that IIUC was in the 'right' inductance [word?...around 500 to 600], then that mod came to make a difference, not a whole lot, and not so's I'd know which exact setting would be considered 'improvement' but at least I could tell it's doing something.
Wait, see if someone corrects some 'wrongness' here....
