Newbie Questions

Ok, so I've read everything I can find on electronics as I want to get into creating stompboxes.  I understand what a transistor, capacitor, and a resistor do.  The problem I'm having is design.  I can read schematics and understand to put this peice there, but what I don't understand is why.  What do they do to the sounds?  Thinks like in the beginning booster project, why do you need a capasitor before the transistor and how do you know to put a certain type of resistor somewere.  If anyone has any links or books that can help me with that understanding I would appreciate it.
