Built the DOD 280a from GGG mostly for bass. Schematic:

I've tried different op amps, but I'm not happy with the range of compression possible. It's either too high all the way left or too low all the way right. I've messed around with the pot value and a few other resistors, but didn't accomplish much. Can anyone suggest a mod where it will go from practically no compression to lots? I used 2n5088s for the transistors. Hopefully you won't suggest other transistors because those are all I have. I made the NL32 version.

I've tried all opamps I have:
ne5532 - too much when left, decent tone
lm1458 - too much when left, so-so tone
opa2604 - too little when right, great tone
op275(?I think) - actually has best range + great tone, but volume ducks down strangely at higher compression settings
tl072 - great tone, don't remember if too low or too high, but I wasn't happy with it
