Tell him to buy the $15 Dano FAB Metal.  I really defy anyone to build a better sounding metal pedal for less $.  Impossible!

Build the doctor boogie. The gain is very very substantial, and im guessing will require fair attention to sheilding if you choose to build it. Its a small circuit board and is easy to make. You dial the four trimmers to the point of maximum gain. If this isnt as good as 'metal zone' - its better.
PS When you search for it some people think its spelt boogey

As alluded to above, remember that building high gain pedals can be tricky.  They tend to squeal like crazy if the wires are too long or even because of the component layout.  It might behoove you to buy (or have your friend buy) a PCB, both to simplify the project and so you know the layout is tested.  Generalguitargadgets.com has BSIAB PCBs.  Get one of those and you'll build your friend a badass dist pedal that he couldn't buy in a store if he wanted to.  Even though it has more parts than you wanted, soldering parts on a pcb is easy.

BTW, as most of you will know, I am not affiliated with GGG.  I have bought from him though, and will likely do so again.

I would throw my hat in for the BSIAB from GGG...though it isn't a metal zone type pedal.  It is high gain, good crunch, all-around incredible sounding pedal and I personally would choose a BSIAB over a metal zone any day.

Look for RDV's HMP pedal.  I have not built it, but have listened to the audio samples and can say that it's a nice sounding unit and not a terribly complex build.

Hi.
Some of Joe Davisson's circuits are high-gain and they mostly have really good tone.
The Blackfire might suit you.

Joe Davisson's stuff is awesome. Try them all. I like the vulcan most but all are awesome.

Here's a Blackfire layout for you
It's a very fine sounding "High Gainer"
RDV's HMP - Lite is also superb and fairly simple.

My Dr. Boogie can get sounds similar to my Metal Zone. My vote would be for the Dr. Boogie.  :icon_wink:

Ok, I'll throw my two pennies in: Dr. Boogey.

Not exactly what I'd call an 'easy' build, but it does do the high-gain thing very well. I'm having issues lately with the treble being too high and the mids making it worse, but other than that, it's a monster.

It is compared to building a Metal Zone clone!  :icon_wink:
