Anybody (maybe only UK) have a copy of the guitar projects book by R A Penfold,(or a PDF) I had a copy years ago but never got round to building anything out of it but now fancy trying some of the projects out.

He also did an advanced book too if anyone has that

Cheers

The need for money and imminent house move mean I am about to start selling off stuff.

As well as pedals and stuff a bunch of FX/music electronics books were going to be part of the sacrifice. There's some Penfold ones in the bunch.

I'll have to dig them out and see what condition they're in, some of the earlier Babani (or whatever it is) ones will be in poor condition. But the 2 later and larger ones with stripboard layouts will be pretty much as new.

COOL STEVE, you in the UK? Also you built any of these projects? Are they any good?

Yeah in Wales.

Built some of the stuff from the early books and some of the versions that were marketed as Maplin projects.

They're as good as you make them and use them like any other project, not very helpfull I know but that's how it is.

Nah thats pretty helpful I never expected them to be amazing having owned some of the books! But just thought might be able to mod them into something quirky

Let me know if you decide what you want for them (can it be a sensible price please Steve! lol Don't need no 200quid book!)

Some of the Penfold projects are very good and others are nothing special. The advanced project book isn't by Penfold and I can't remember off the top of my head who did it. The wierdest effect I made from the Penfold books is the metal effect pedal which I don't think has a commercial equivialent. At slow speeds it produces a deep tremelo type effect and at high speeds it produces a weird disharmonic sound.

I have a few Penfold Books.  I don't think I've ever built any of his projects (though I've breadboarded some), but his books have definitely been an influence, if only because he explains some of the detail behind his circuits so you go away thinking 'oh, so that's how a ****** works!' (he swears a lot).

The metal effects unit was from 'Practical Electronic Musical Effects Units' by Penfold. They had a copy left in Modern Radio in Bolton last time I went for £2.50 as they are selling off all their Babani books for half price.  The 'Advanced projects for the Electric Guitar' is by J Chatwin. I got my copy from Maplins but I don't think they do it anymore. I also have 'Electronic Music Projects' by Penfold which is an older book and some of the effects have no controls they are simply on or off.
I agree that they do explain a lot of how the circuit works and often give descriptions on how to alter some parameters such as timing in the tremelo circuits by suggesting different values fior some components.
If I can get to Bolton this week I can try and get the book if you would like it and they still have it. Please let me know,

You can get a lot of his books from Amazon for next to nothing (though some are expensive).

There's also a place in the UK that has some old stock out of print stuff.  I'll post the link later.

Hey Guys thanks so much for all the info, Col if you do go to Bolton and they have it I'd love to take it off your hands could even do you a copy if you require. Also I have had a message of Steve who has all the books so if they are sensibley priced could do people copies too (pdf)

Cheers

I'd think twice about the PDFs if I were you.  Apart from the dodgy ethics, Bab*ni will have your b*llocks for earrings!

Sorry, I went in yesterday and most of the project books have been sold after being there for years. They were still there 3 weeks ago! I can only think that someone has seen them selling on ebay and bought the lot! Most of the Babani books left are relating to obsolete computer programmes.
There are a couple of copies of 'Electronic Music Learning Projects' by R Bebbington but here isn't really anything in that relating to stompboxes.

Sorry

That second link of mine was to a company that is selling "Practical Electronic Musical Effects Units".  It's packed with guitar related stuff...and cheap (buy it & support Babani, they produce good books).

An excelleld book Ged. Many of the circuits are bases on LM13700 ICs and most of them I have tried have worked well apart from the auto wah which made strange sounds!

I actually own this book but haven't ever built any of the projects ( :icon_redface:), so thanks for the feedback Col!   :icon_lol:

It is a great book though, if only for the explanations (R Penfold is a great educator).
