Ruby amp from newbie not working

I built the Ruby from ROG and incorporated the 'Bassman' mods.  When the battery is connected/disconnected while the guitar is plugged into the Ruby and it into the 8 Ohm, 12" Celestion (old Fender cab), there is a 'popping' sound like you would expect when plugging a gtr into a 'live' amp.  Also, when flipping the SPST (described later in msg), there is a slighter popping (very subtle) -- other than this, it does nothing.  I am certain of my gtr, cable, spkr box, spkr cbl, etc.

IC (Radio Shack LM386) shows the following VDC readings: pin 1 @ 1.32 VDC; 2 @ 6.9 mV; 3 @ zero; 4 @ zero; 5 @ 4.38 VDC; 6 @ 9.4 VDC; 7 @ 4.74 VDC; and 8 @ 1.32 VDC.  Copper Top showing 9.5 VDC.  MFP102 shows 9.4 VDC @ Drain; zero @ Source and 0.2 mV @ Gate.

I built it on perfboard.  Used the suggested 10K Ohm Log pot for Volume and left off the gain pot in favor of a mini SPST between IC pins 1 & 8 switching between nothing and a 2.2K Ohm resistor (as part of the 'Bassman' mods).

I'm not finding anything shorted to ground that shouldn't be; I've not found any shorting via sloppy soldering, etc.  I did read the 'what to do when it doesn't work thread' and hope I've included sufficient information here.  I would greatly appreciate any help.

Thank you.

Maybe you transposed the pins when posting the voltages, but having the source pin at zero volts would indicate an issue.  This could be due to wiring or incorrect pinout.

is the MPF102 flat side up  D S G in your circuit?
