May Queen: extra controls?

Is it possible to add gain and tone controls to the May Queen? I read somewhere about adding a 1k pot to control the gain, but wasn't so sure on the tone.

Would this go in series before/after the cap? I'm assuming that's a gain control.

Just replace that 2.2k resistor with a 2k pot wired as a variable resistor or what the hell, make it a 5k.

For a tone, I'd find some various values for that cap that's shaded and hook them on a 6 way switch for a vari-tone style thingy.
