If I ever was to spend so much money on an effect, it would be something like that...

That's a crazy one ! I thought they only made drums...

I've seen one of these up close and personal like, but I didn't get to hear it in action. The owner assured me it is both wicked and decent.
I don't doubt it.

The schemos are available at GEO, you know.
It's not a good candidate for DIY - it's too complicated for what it does and would take a lot of tweaking.

Here's what it does:
1. distortion
2. a Vox-style repeat percussion setup with the speed controlled by the distortion and/or envelope
3. a dual voltage controlled filter that moves in odd ways depending on the envelope and the settings of the "formant trajectory" switch

Other than Mark Hammer's theory of lovable side effects and nonlinearities, this could be much more easily build out of other blocks.

The auction is another of those sad things. Looks like the reserve is not yet met at $760.00. Silly.

Still, I guess there are collectors who simply must have a specific rock, or bit of canvas with some paint on it. But I find that I don't moan about them getting whatever rock or canvas they want.

I used to have one-- it was just in an office I moved into and they said I could have it. It only sort of worked, it made a lot of vowel sounds, mostly. The switches are clear and light up different colors. It wasn't in as good shape as the one in those pictures, the hinge was broken, etc.

I had no idea what it was other than weird and sort of broken. I sent it to one of the bigger vintage dealers on the net who said over the phone he could repair it. I sent it to him to repair, not to sell it to him, but a week later I got a check for $500 and never heard from him again. I was very broke at the time and was happy to get it, but in retropect I wish I'd hung on to it just for the value.

If it was clear that it was for repair, that was dirty. He probably had a high dollar order for finding one of them waiting. In your place, he would not have had to contact me again. My lawyer would have contacted HIM.Someone who deliberately does stuff that deserves to be tarred and feathered.

Too bad you cashed the check. By doing that, you "accepted" his "purchase" of the effect, or so he could say in court.

Ludwig sure made some crazy stuff.  I used to have one of their Van Beethoven pedals.  Deafening man, deafening. :icon_wink:

Yeah, at the time, I was living off of $800 a month, so I was happy about it, not knowing what I had. I thought it was shifty, but couldn't really turn down $500 for something I got free. Wish I'd kept it now, just for the value appreciation, but I suppose it not the only gear I ever sold that I should have kept.

That dealer has since disappeared off the radar.

Fixed one of these up recently.  Has some great sounds.  Really two filters that move up and down with the pedal (either together or opposite), and the repeat percussion can actually be used to affect the filters so that you can get more the spaceship taking off sounds.  Requires a lot of work and tweaking to sound right, and there are some bits that are just ugly (like the fuzz sound), but I am planning to build one up soon.

Paul Perry (Frostwave)

Sir H.C., if you are going to all that work, put an extra fuzz in it (a 'good' fuzz) and a select switch for 'traditional' or 'better' fuzz.
