You can do these mods on a USA big muff too? They are true bypass and of better quality than the Russian ones.

Yeah, I think they sound pretty good too.

manson

<dutch> Bernardduur, waarom vind je de russische beter dan? </dutch>  :P

Bernardduur

[End Dutch] ;)

Ok, so I might just try a Russian one! Thanks Bernard. Oh and one more question.. You say you also did the creamy dreamer mod on your black muff. Is this the same thing Yun mentions in this thread?

Bernardduur

Yes and no; I only removed the emitter resistors and replaced them with jumpers (and made it switchable)

Yun, I don't think there is any real controversy to be stirred up.  As for "trade secrets", Mr. Doucette is in another line of work and whatever money is to be made off the sale of the Creamy Dreamer these days is much more a property of what people can fetch on e-bay or in private sales.  My sense is that all the original inventory is long gone from the Doucette garage.  As good as the mods were to a number of folks, they were not under any sort of patent protection.  As such, it is not really any different than a set of mods one of us here would have dreamed up.

Incidentally, I noticed in the current Vintage Guitar that E-H is now selling a version of the BMP (at least in terms of controls) in a 1590BB-type case as a "Little Big Muff".  I may be alone in my opinion, but it's as bad a marketing move for E-H as it was for Fender and Gibson to move into the budget guitar market.  Like it or not, that folded steel case is part of the E-H "brand", and part of what makes their pedals distinct from wannabes.

One more thing I noticed. Yun says to remove the emmiter resistors of Q1, Q2 and Q3 and leave Q4. But looking at the picture, shouldn't that be Q2, 3 and 4, and leave the resistor there on Q1? Oh, and the resistors should be removed, and jumpered in place.

I was wondering if there's a way to post some kind of edited schematic of this mod from an already working version.  I suppose I could just give some of these mods a shot but there seems to be some confusion of how far to take this.  My BM was done on perf board and these mods are simple on the PCB's but when I start digging in to change things on perf it can get pretty nasty.  I would really like to hear how it turned out for others who've tried it already before I (destroy) I mean modify my Big Muff build.  Thanks Yun and all.

Well I did some of the mod and I love it.  I removed the 502pf clipping caps and jumpered the emitter resisters at Q1, Q2, Q3.  And stopped there for now.  But I'm not sure I really need to do the rest of the resister change out because I like it as is.  My volume has increased greatly.  I was having a problem with that before.  Also this also fixed my sustain problem I was having too.  Now instead of two volume knobs my sustain knob actually adjust the sustain like it should.  The other thing I like is the tone knob seems to really have more adjustment.  I get a low muff at full clockwise and a nice usable distortion at full counter clockwise.
I may try the rest of the mod later but for now I'm enjoying using my Big Muff all over again.
Thanks again Yun

If Gueseppe says it's best, it's best.
For Gueseppe, at the very least, could be for you too.

look for a post of mine.  Removing the emitter Rs is a hack IMO.  I posted something not long ago in a thread like this, adding 3 parts and easy to reverse and even switch in and out.

grounded emitter circuits, look in TAOE

Jack thanks for the pictures.

Yun

Hey AMZ,

Are you the guy that i got those pics from eh?  I've had them on my computer for a while, i forgot about them....

Just keep in mind guys:  i didn't have that much time to look at the circuit as i would have liked to.

I noticed the 18K resistors because i like the Jordon bosstone A LOT.

I agree with MR.Bernardduur; the russian muffs have better control over tone.  That's why i like the russians better.

If i ever get a chance to Peek at the Sustain punch mod again, i'll look more thouroghly.

Oldrocker,

I'm glad i could help a little bit.  It is a very good mod.

I was wondering myself if bypassing the emitter resistors with caps would work better than straight jumpers.

Ayear ago or so I've put a switchable cap across Q3's emitter - works wonderfully. really adds shine and sliciness(?!)

It's makes it abit less fuzzy and more along the line of a distortion - witch is not too shabby :)
