Hi,

I wanna do a good compressor with a lot of sustain. I don't really know what are the differencies between the ross and the dynacomp.
I've seen on the schematic that the ross uses more parts and that he has a better bias....
Is it important ? Does the ross sounds better ?
Let me know about your experiences.
Sorry for my bad english !!

i'd be quite intrested in peoples views aswell, i think the ross has some sort of extra filtering and sounds more transparent, but i havn't had the chance to hear the ross. Anyone had the luxury of ABing them?

benfox

yes maybe a comparative test...

There is absolutely no difference between these two in terms of the compression.  I repeat: absolutely no difference.  The part of the circuit that accomplishes the compression is 100% identical.  ALL differences between them have to do with things like noise, treble response, and distortion.

benfox

Thanks ! ;)
Do you mean that the ross is cleaner...
Whitch one of them is the most neutral ?
Sorry for my bad english !!

I'd say that the Ross is cleaner but the Dyna can add a bit of character to your tone
so to speak.
Country players LOVE the Dyna but, lately I've been leaning toward my Ross build.

You meen that it makes good attack ?

I'm looking for a lot of sustain is there any of it in the dynacomp ?
Sorry for my bad english !!

delbowski

the dynacomp has LOTS of sustain... but you gotta use it right and know what its limits are.  i like it!

The attack is the same as the Ross, the Dyna is a bit more raw sounding, not as clean and refined as the Ross Comp.
Being a Country player though, I tend to like more Lo-Fi sounding pedals than most.
Just me though I'm sure!

benfox

thanks
you convince me i gonna build the dynacomp !

Here's my Ross Clone with all the known mods on it:

...no you're not drunk, it's a blurry pic....  :icon_mrgreen:

i recently replaced the transistors (more carefully matched), some caps(orange drops and mallory 150's), some resistors(CC,CF,MF) and i put Ge diodes.

It sounds fantastic!

alfafalfa

What exactly did you do to it , what were the mods ?
I made a ross clone quite some time ago and added toneknob but I don't remember anything about  other mods.  Do the trannies have to be matched ?

Look forward to some info !!

Did you have a soundclip??

Lo-fi pedals hold a certain appeal to me as a bassist as well...but I'd build both if I had the time. I like a dirty sound, but at the same time I love to get a beautiful clean sound with my CE-20. It's all up to your tastes, I suppose.

I'm right there with ya.
There's room for both in my music!

http://fuzzcentral.tripod.com/compressor.html

i guess you'll find many answers in there...

yes, it's good to match the transistors, mostly for noise issues.

EDIT: the two external toggles on my clone are for mods on/off, and the middle is for stock/pot controlled attack

alfafalfa

Thanks  Alderbody  I forgot all about Fuzz Central !
Gonna try the other transistors 2N5088.

I did the dynoacomp...good but not as good as the supasustain !!
Less sustain less bass...buuut great compression in terms of response.
How do you match a transistor ??
Witch one in the dynacom ross should be matched ?
Sorry for my bad english !!

QuoteHow do you match a transistor ??

Just make sure they have the same(+/-) Hfe. (mine are +/-1)

QuoteWich one in the dynacom ross should be matched ?

I think, all of them.

Q3 and Q4 are the most significant in terms of matching, though.
