i also read when fender dismantled the "woodstock" strat to make the clones of it, it had a .1uf tone cap!
All strats had a .1uf cap from beginning of production till 70' or 71'. Then the .050uf till at least the mid 80's, then later a .022uf cap.

also they were ceramic .1uf caps, and in 1968 they switched to greenie type caps, and then later that year switched back to ceramics again....

Uuuh, it sounds intersting, I've never known this, I have to try (are you sure about that?). Are the custom shop vintage series wired that way? They sounds good to my ears (at least the relic ones)

No, no, I believe in Fretwire, no doubt, mine was just an exclamation of big surprise! In so many years using fenders I didn't know this thing (maybe because I use the tone always at max? :) )

same here,.. Fretwire told me about this too  and i was surprised... and when i did the "mod" my guitar was that much closer to a vintage 'jimi' strat sound...

That layout you posted in your first post of this thread,.. Is that the layout RogerMayer used?

I like to stick with original layouts of pedals i build  :icon_wink:

b_rogers

man, a .1uf was standard?

i would think they would be kinda dull sounding with that big of a cap.

i have a .0068 in mine and it really livened the guitar up. the tone controls now just take the edge off the top.
i guess using a bright amp and bright fuzz would overcome all that rolloff...

Thanks, not always right, but definately authentic.

The vintage 57' & 62' reissues also had .1uf caps. The only thing I'm uncertain of is the when the .022 cap started. I'm thinking late 80's to early 90's. Alot of the Squires still come with .047uf caps, probably because the cheap ceramic pu's would be too bright with .022's.

That's old news about the .1uf caps. There's a few sources around to verify it if someone's really interested. Plus, I've seen under the pickguards of a few older Strats to verify it also.

Here's a 67' Strat Schematic.
If you enlarge it, and look at part #16, you'll see:
"Capacitor - Ceramic  .1 x 50 - 10%"

Fretwire is definitely right. 0.1 uF is what I use in my strats and I don't find the sound dark at all. Maybe with Texas Specials, but not with my CS 69s or my 85 squire pickups.

SRV's guitars all had 0.1uF tone caps in them as well.

The only layout I've seen from the original is this picture.

What?
Darlintons in the RM axis? Do those trannys say MPSA13?
Must not be a gut shot of the axis?

thats a gut shot of the octavia..notice the diodes facing the same direction. i have one sitting here with the same layout..theres a axis fuzz in the building blocks of the octavia, but in the octavia it uses mpsa13 transistors, with a 3906 at the input.

Whoa! I'm sorry about that.  I'm building the octavia right now and so had it on the brain.  I've never seen the guts of a Axis Fuzz.

Sorry.

i use a .1uf polyester cap after fretwire told me and i like it too.... i just can't find the .1uf ceramic caps like the old guitar had,.. only can find ones with the date code being from the later 70's 80's...not 60's or earlier.. i believe they would sound different...

that's OK,.. when i looked at it i thought it was another pedal.. that is a clear pic BTW...

i'll search around for a gutshot of the axis... martymart?

Somebody posted a link to those pics a while back.  They are great pics.  I wish I had a Rocket series fuzz; they are the coolest boxes ever, and the RM pedals I have built have been very impressive.

The RM rocket series are all great sounding effects IMO.
If i did not build my own,  I would  play the rocket series effects. I have a couple of friends that won't play anything else as far as fuzz/octave goes. I used to play a RM axis fuzz clone full time in my live rig for a long time. I just got a little tired of the little bit of octave that it added when I had my guitar volume rolled back for clean/OD tones. I switched back to a  low gain FF type of circuit about 6 moonths ago.

This thread is giving the the itch to build a RM classic fuzz.

I haven't built the RM Classic Fuzz yet, but based on the Axis and Octavia I bet it is wicked.  Maybe that should be my next build.

Classic Fuzz - here's the schematic:
http://aronnelson.com/gallery/Schematics-etc/RM_Classic_Fuzz
It's an easy build, it's just a Dallas Arbiter Fuzz with a 2k pot and 1k output resistor. As long as you use good trannys and bias it right, it will sound as good as the originals. My favorite Ge fuzz.
