Call me out if I'm off base...
except somebody had switched the two wires going to the fuzz pot
so when the fuzz knob was turned down you would loose the bias voltage to Q2
it ended up being a variable bias knob

Shouldn't there be 3 wires going to the Gain knob, [Gnd, the bypass cap, and Q2E/100k], it sounds like, since bias changes with knob adjust, that the Gain knob is working like a V/R from 100k to ground, you can check this, connect the DMM [set to 20k range] to ground and Q2E, if the resistance changes with knob adjustment, that will change bias.
I saw it called as a Fuzz Face, whatever the gain knob value is, it will remain the same because Gnd. and the 100k connect *across the pot wafer.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

that is exactly what was happening
except the ground lug was soldered to the back of the pot
and couldn't go to ground because of the plastic washer
so at max fuzz setting the circuit would work but at lower settings it would sound splatty and terrible
I figured it was not biased properly that is when I started messing with the trim pot and fried the Q1

after replacing it and continuing I started thinking about the wiring and that is when I checked the Geofex site
found the fuzz knob had to be grounded, removed the plastic washer and Voila !!!!!

the fuzz know was working as a voltage divider

Ok.  So I drew this schematic based on what dansamp said a while back in this thread.  Does it even make sense?  It seems awfully strange to me for a FF.  I plan to try and breadboard it now, but I thought I'd ask the experts.

Tcobretti, I had a Stone Fuzz, I sold a few years ago. Everything on the schematic looks right above, except I think the 47k lin. trim pot on mine was between b+ and the collector of Q1. I could be mistaken. Also the 100k resistor was between the emitter of Q2, and the base of Q1 as in the basic fuzz face. It was not in series between 2.2uF cap and emitter of Q1. I don't remember a 33k resistor at all. Again, I could be mistaken.pl

just in case you can't find them in the states...i live in south america, and bc family are the only i can get...so i can send you a couple of bc559 for repair if you wanna take it back to the store...

PL - Thanks for the help.  Everything you say certainly makes more sense to me than what I was able to glean from the previous post in this thread.

SWT - Another guystarted the thread who had bought the used Stone Fuzz.  I freaking wish I could find a used Mayer pedal!
