I originally breadboarded my May Queen with substitute transistors and it sounded dreadful. After listening again to the ROG clips I decided to etch a PCB and get the right parts and it sounds bang-on.

I'm glad that it worked out.  Which transistors did you use, so others can avoid them?

By the way could it be that a J201 is a must in it, and MPF102 BS170 are not good for it?

Armando

BTremblay what do you think about the above, is a J201 the "sole" component to be used in it? , or a MPF/BS170 will do ?

thx
Armando

BTremblay thank you for the May Queen and all the other circuits you created... :icon_wink:

Well, I'm only a third of the 'groove team, but you are certainly welcome.

The MPF102 will have less gain and a different tonal character.  A BS170 may require biasing modifications since it is a MOSFET.  I believe that Joe Davisson used a MOSFET in a FF-style setup and Tim Escobedo also used one in his Many Faces of Fuzz circuits.  So it is possible, but will produce different (maybe good, maybe bad) results.

thx B Tremblay, so I'd better wait for J201's to come!

so stay tuned, and, meanwhile, thx to you all lads!

BC546B for Q1 & Q2. Also didn't work well with BC546B just for Q1, rest of circuit as per original spec. Sounded totally lifeless. Committed the same build to PCB with the correct components and I'm knocked out by the sound. Almost does pinched harmonics on its own.

On e-bay take a look at items offered by DPI4PARTS.

I've bought  a few hundred transistors and FETs, all branded, all top spec. His postage is really fair to England (cheaper than domestic rates!) and I've had excellent dealings with this guy.

thx again Mick

I've placed an order on 19.04 for some trans/fets, they arrived today! what a packaging! awesome and what a save! I've payed a half of what I usually pay in EU.

Cheers

I built this from GGG layout/pcb and LOVE the tone!!  Heres my prob though. I mounted the trimmer (assuming this is bias) on the outside so i could play with it.  When i Move the bias pot to about 4oclock it has no noise but the sustain is gone. it fizzles off. I love the knob at half way (great sustain and bite) but its so noisy. Anybody know whats up?
