the meathead is a fuzz pedal. when he has the setting he wants, it is LOUD so he has to turn his amp down. but he likes to switch to clean a lot, and when he switches to clean, the fuzz pedals gain isn't active anymore, thus causing his amp to be practically whispering. so that's why he wants a clean boost. he doesn't want it for making his loud cleans even louder (unless it's possible to get a little bit of break up, but that comes later on down the road)
Notwithstanding all the reasons people listed about which boosters are good and why boosters are good, its starting to sound to me like your friend really needs better volume control on his Meathead.  Looking up this pedal, I see it lacks anyu sort of level control which is the crux of the problem.  Ideally, he ought to be able to get better balance between fuzz and bypass than he's getting   Not unless the sound he likes is achieved only when his amp's front end is pummeled by the Meathead at full tilt. Under those circumstances, a clean boost might be necessary for achieving proper level balance.  On the other hand, looking at the schematic, there is essentially one simple tube section in the amp prior to the volume control and the tone controls follow the volume pot, so I'm not sure the sound he likes is coming from something other than the Meathead.

What he *really* needs to do is to install a volume control on the Meathead.  He's not unreasonable to want to keep it stock, but he's gonna be faced with this problem for a long time under too many circumstances.  I'm biased, and I don't deny that it may sound good, but this is not a thoughtful pedal.  Pity.

i'm with you. it's not well thought out.

but he asked for a clean boost, so that's what i'm giving him!
