Unless its a hardship (and I understand that for many it could be), just perf it.  Vero is a wonderful thing, but sometimes there is just too much to keep track of.  Far easier sometimes to just follow the diagram and connect the parts.  The FY-2 is simle enough that there aren't that many parts o connect.  If you manage to score some C536 units, just note that their pinout is ECB not EBC.

sorry to keep on this but i almost have it.

so was the layout done assuming that c536's were being used?  if so, then i need to switch my pinout to use an ECB transistor, this may be my problem...
No, this is a very good question to ask.

The Vero layout from Andrew uses the standard EBC pinout of a garden variety NPN transistor.  So, if you used "normal" 2N5089 units, their pinout should correspond to the pinout assumed on the layout.

Not sure if you have one, but if not, try and score yourself a DMM with transistor testing.  When you consider how many different transistors there, its worth its weight in gold.  Personally, I generally use my hfe test function on the DMM to identify pinouts instead of looking them up.  Helpful as well when you have a par whose number is not easily made out and could be one of several.

i just bought one of those a couple of months ago, circuit specialists, a great deal and definitely a great tool.  the hfe on both of these transisters is near 500.

Okay, I carried out the experiment and it worked like a charm.

If you insert a 50k pot, wired as variable resistor, between the .1uf cap to ground in the midscoop filter and ground, you can adjust the degree of scoop and produce a nice throaty sound.  The pot can be either 25k or 50k but going higher than 50k delivers no added benefit.  This mod is actually more useful than what I had suggested the other day of replacing the midscoop with a fixed resistor, because it yields a lot of in-between sounds.  Of course, since the scoop introduces passive loss, the more you cancel the scoop the more the level increases, but thats a small price to pay.

I recorded some samples of mine and will try and get them posted either tonight or tomorrow.  I'm liking this more and more. :icon_biggrin:

Incidentally, you can consider using this mod on your Superfuzz, your Foxx Tone Machine, your Bee-Baa, or whatever.  Here is the redraw of Stuart Castledine's original drawing with the mod added in, plus a pop-eliminating resistor on the input. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v474/mhammer/moddedfy-2.gif

Okay, just posted a zipfile with a sample MP3 at my site:  http://hammer.ampage.org
The posting explains the soundfile and what was done.
I suspect this ought to start a rash of 2SC536 purchasing and builders' questions. :icon_wink:

Enjoy!

Here's a quick vero layout for the FY-2 with Marks "Scoop" mod added....the layout is untested, but "should" be fine...i showed it using BC108's, but many other NPN transistors will work, as has been discussed previously.
