http://www.tonepad.com/project.asp?id=9

edit: ah, keely.... I somehow automatically read that as the Ross compressor which the keely one is based off of. It shouldn't be too far away.

Yeah, pretty much.
Personally I feel the Ross Clones from Tonepad or GGG are far better or at the very least equal
yo what RK is producing.
So much so that, after I built my Ross clone, I flushed my Keeley down at ebay.
I used the proceeds to puechase more parts for DIY project from Small Bear!
I still don't miss my Keeley Comp and perhaps, never will
;)

I don't think Keeley makes any secret of this, at least he didn't used to. He uses careful part matching, and high quality parts, and his unit is TBP. No reason you couldn't make a DIY *workalike*. I prefer the Dyna-Comp, but I tend to use a compressor for clean sounds. I *wore out* the compressor> OD sound years ago.

Did you ever notice that those cheap Strats you can buy on-line have exactly the same number of frets, strings, pickups, and controls as the really expensive ones?  And that the bodies are exactly the same size with the same headstock shape, a whammy bar that looks the same with the same number of screws and springs?  So why is one $99 and the other over $2000?  Because the materials are often of higher quality and are selected, not just thrown together.

Bob Keeley makes a point of picking the components used based on their properties.  Whether it always makes as big a difference as he or anyone else thinks is a separate matter (and really multiple parallel matters since one can be right about this component and wrong about that one), but in the case of the compressor, yes it is a Ross clone, but with some effort and thought and measurement put into components used.  Costs a little more that way, but then HE'S putting in the work, not you.  You could build the same thing yourself, and pick the components yourself, and save yourself a bit of change....if you know what to look for, listen for, meausre, and where to get it,  Not everyone does, which is why Bob provides a valuable service for a lot of musicians.

You are correct in wondering if there is some pivotal circuit change, but in a great many instances of boutique pedals, the difference is in the quality of the build and parts, not the actual design itself.

Get out of my brain, Mr. Hammer.   :) Well said. :)

Mr. Hammer is correct.
You can't take away from the quality of RK's builds.
Not everyone has the time nor the desire to do DIY as hard as that is to understand!
He does do a good job but, his enclosures aren't etched!!! :icon_biggrin:
..........sorry!
