Sort of Overdrivey, very little distortion w/a some sustain... If that makes any sense.

Sorry Brian, but i can't listen to the clip cause there is a server restriction and i can't download it...

But from your description i would recommend either the "professor tweed" or the "eighteen".

At least in my setup (BF Fender amp) they both add a sweet breakup to mild distortion.

If you push them with a booster they can scream, too...   :icon_mrgreen:

You could try to build them in perfboard for a start, see if you dig them and then move to pcb stuff if you like.

Mine are perfboard and they are OK. No problem so far.

Good Luck!  :)

Thanks Alderbody, that's sounds like a very sensible approach. I'm waiting on a delivery from http://www.mouser.com/ which should give all of the parts I need to put all 3 projects on perfboard along with 3 different boosters. The 18 & Prof Tweed sound great BTW. Can't wait to get started.
Oh yeah, if you get a chance, let me know what your server restrictions are and I'll post links to all 3 sound clips when I'm done. I can make them really small (dial-up friendly)  if need be... Whatever it takes to make your ISP happy. Personally, I'd love to see more people post sound clips. e.g. I've scoured the world for 3 days to find a sound clip of the Crowther Audio Hotcake and can't come up with a single one. Seems 1 out 3 people it them but nobody's posted a clip.... I'm gonna' shoot out an email to croth@clear.net.nz and see what he says... I heard he's a good guy and doesn't mind correspondence...

Thanks again,
Brian

Hey Brian,

thanks for trying but it's not quite like that....
For the time, my only "exit" to the web is through my office ISP which is quite fast (high speed DSL) but since it's a corporate service we have some restrictions (...)

btw, i'm sure you'll have fun with those builds!

don't forget to bias those FETs!  ;)

That's very common at a lot of companies... Could be that they want you to be working instead of watching movies and listening to music... What a dumb rule ha? Looks like you'll have to quit that job I guess... :-)

I use my Umble all the time, straight into the power amp input of a fender hotrod deluxe.  It's a very sensitive beast, all the controls interact and affect the drive so it seems to me.

My only problem with it is that with high drive settings it goes a little harsh for me.  On run off groove they said they removed some large resistors and small capacitors from the original Dumble schematics and they didn't really affect the tone.  My worry is, maybe they did, and they just didn't notice it?  I don't know, just a thought.  I want to somehow add some filtering in mine after the EQ stack to get rid of some of the harshness.

You wouldn't to be able to post a sound clip would ya'. I'd be interested in hearing the harshness your talking about. That's what I'm trying to avoid. Hey, off topic but, I bought a Boss GT-6 this week on Ebay. I got it for $170.00. Pretty sweet. Kind of a cop-out I guess but it'll definitely give me the sound I'm after. As I said in an earlier post... "The sound I want I'm able to get from my Boss BR-864 Digital recorder. With the GT-6 I'll be able to tweak that sound to my liking and be portable... which you can't do with the recorder. I've still got a bunch of builds on my plate though. You might wanna check out the Big Hare http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=46180.0 by Phaeton... It sounds great and may be your answer to harsh drive issues. Super job by Mr. Phaeton BTW...

I would, but i only have a dial up antique internet connection while im in temporary lodgings... so I can't really! soz.

Its kinda bright, hard to explain, thats with a G&L legacy, it's kinda smoother with the Esprit.  A real Robben Ford type tone, which is most excellent, and smooth-singing and clear.  It's not horribly harsh; just very lively, but I *might* add a presence control after the final gain stage at some point to see what it sounds like.

I like it, I'd like to build a tube version and power amp one day.

Did you ever get to try out the Hotcake?

Hmmm, Roben Ford... That alone makes it worth the build for me.
I haven't tried the Crowther Hotcake 'cause I can't find a soundclip anywhere... I keep meaning to send him an email but it slipped my mind. I'll post a soundclip if I ever get one so we all can have a listen.
