Any commonly available alternative trannies for a Rangemaster in the UK?

Evening all,

I have a couple of mates (and mates of mates of mates etc) that want me to build them rangemasters, but my very small supply of Germaniums (ie: 4 of em) has already gone on various stuff, I seem to remember one went on the floor somewhere and never resurfaced!. I think that they would be just as happy with a non-rangemaster, just one that sounds similiar.  Is it totally necessary to use a Ge tranny in the circuit or is there a suitable Si replacement commonly available in the UK?  The prices of Ge trannies is getting ridiculous now, and although Small bear are by far the cheapest, I'd like to try Si instead and not have to rely on intercontinental postage.

thanks,

Jim

ESR sell Ge trannies.  Can't remember what type, but they'd do.

Cricklewood electronics sell a number of Ge devices, but you'll pay an arm and a leg for them.

Hi
Try here: http://hometown.aol.co.uk/oldradioparts/semiconductors.htm
I can recommend the AC188s for 88 pence.  I've used them in both fuzzfaces and a rangemaster, and found them as good or better than AC128s and NKT275s.
