i was looking into building a few pedals that produce odd/ambient noises, but i couldn't find much. can you point me in the direction of a few relatively easy layouts (preferably veroboard), or even throw out some names of pedals that are under this category?  thanks for the help.

do you ever do any circuit bending?  i have seen a lot of it on electronic toys like toy guitars, drums things, and cheapo keyboards.  i have even seen that damned singing fish thing with bends!

i have been thinking of buying up some cheap effects from ebay (rocktek, fab tones, etc) to try bending.  should be interesting.

actually i just started looking for a speak and spell to bend. i read about it a while ago and always thought it would be something really cool to do.

Check out some of Dragonfly's layouts in the gallery.
The Black Hole is the locale for some different circuits.
His layouts are fantastic and easy to understnad/build.

i love the blue box.  turn the blend all the way down, and use a volume pedal to swell into a reverb.  sounds awesome.  nothing like a guitar.

square wave, aka, "nintendo sounds".   tonepad.com has a project.

UglyFace, Parallel Universe, Bronx Cheer, Green Ringer for some odd harmonics....
I love the smell of solder in the morning.

I made a psychtar and a thing modulator in the same box. It's super-noisy, and an easy build. Soundclipps here

I also second the feedback-looper.

I just recently boxed up a 555 square wave generator in a RACO I found in the street.  This is a noisemaker in the most literal sense.  It's a drone instrument.  I added a on/off switch and a 2M knob (the design called for a 1M).  The 2M gave me a better range of pitch.  I like it through delay and into a stereo chorus for some movement.

birt

build the  Shin-ei wah/surf/siren. it's easy and makes a lot of noise :p

4ms/Commonsound also has the Triwave Picogenerator.
Kinda a complicated build but you can mod it to be completly unique.

You can get a PCB for the Sound Lab mini-synth. Slightly more ambitious than the other suggestions so far, but a lot of bang for buck.

I built one  and it makes some interesting beeping noises.

I've got all the components onto my MFOS SoundLab board.  Just need to do panel wiring now.
