Anyone else taking advantage of some of these Radio Shacks closing?  I know there is a lot of "Rat" Shack bashing on this board.  I am getting parts at 70% off.  Hard to beat getting a two pack of 1/4 jacks for 81 pennies or resistors at about 5 cents each.

If you don't know about this then go to Radioshack.com and search for stores nearby you.  The ones closing will have a closing symbol by them.

if anyone per chance feels like scoring me some 1.5v/25ma bulbs (#272-1139) I would be very grateful - these are no longer available up here ... I like these things a lot - too bad they're getting scarce ...

thx, jc

Just read through that linked post.  Boy, I never looked at Futurlec.  They seem like a better deal than Mouser aside from the selection.

i've had one bad experience with futurlec.  so i didn't order from them for a long time.  i did about two weeks ago, and recieved the order a week later.  not bad.  the order was perfect too.  i ordered over 76 different items, many of them several of.  so... i say order from them.  hard to pass up deals like $.50 pots that are alphas.

In a sense I guess I'm lucky 'cause my Rat Shack is not closing however,
the parts inventory is starting to get smaller and the prices went up.....
like gasoline I guess :(

i cant see this having an affect on the prices at RS as their products are really not oil produced, but stuff like plastic and glass that come from oil tend to increase in price as oil increases in price.

A couple years ago I bought a bunch of Radio Shack parts at an estate sale. The deceased guy must have stocked up when RS was getting rid of their line of blister packed ICs. Check the sale price of this example!

Sadly, the RS closing near me could only cough up a couple bottle of ferric. All the stuff I like from them was long gone.

I'm sorry.  :icon_confused:
I used petroleum as an analogy, not to mean oil prices had to do with RS's pricing at all.
Maybe it would have been better to have said that the prices have been going up
like the price of coffee but, well, their products don't have much to do with caffeine either.....
unless you count the Coke machine out in front!
It was a joke!!!!! :icon_lol:

anyway, i went to my radioshack today.  nothing's changed.  prices are just as high as ever, and no change in product.  very disappointing...

Just a note about the 1/4" jacks from Radio Shack, don't rely on them for heayy duty use.

I installed one in a homemade Strat I wired for a friend, and gave him the other one that came with the 2 jacks pack.  He had to replace it because it was always getting loose and he had to screw it a bit more everyday, until it would just fall apart. The other one did the same, so I bought him a good Swithcraft one to replace the cheap one.

I had the same problem with my boxes. Screw them too tight, and they break.

But I like their other things they sell cheap "sometimes".

The 'Coaster' [non-aggressive phone sales 'technician']...nice guy too... in the local RS today agreed that the 'Agg.' phone sales techniques probably spiked a sales chart a few years running, and of course who can argue with That?
Me...I suggested they should have taken a couple years off...that stuff is embarassing...90% of the people agressively targetted for cell phone sales...
A: Didn't want to think about a silly phone in the time alotted for thinking about what they came to the store for.
  B: Already have a phone.
  C. Took umbrage at being approached aggressively AGAIN.
Just one point in many, probably small in the grand scheme of RS history.
I did want some perf, and wouldn't buy caps even if they had or were going to get more Pad Per Hole type...I have no need for sockets if there's no PPH Perf available...so..I don't bum...I'll just get a better deal on some sittin' right here.

I was suprised to see that three locations are closing here where I live. IMO, it's better to stay away from RadioShack, they are WAY overpriced and hardly have any selection anymore.  :icon_rolleyes:

Thanks choklitlove......
I was worried but, I feel much better now  ;)

After reading this thread last night I looked up the nearest closing Radio Shack, about 25 miles from me. I couldn't spot it while driving by. They must've already took down all the signs or something... jeez, what a pisser. On second thought, they're so overpriced that I doubt the discounts would've made much of a difference compared to the cheap online deals anyway, No wonder they're giving it up.

however, i dont know about where you guys live but my county taxes gasoline, adding about 35 cents a gallon to the price in other areas.

i always wanted radio snack to be cooler, even when i was a kid.  i always felt they cut too many corners and never really paid attention to what a true hobbiest wants.

You're only a few years older than me Mr. Vex, and I remember going there as a kid sometimes. Even then, it seemed like they were really interested in selling transistor radios and that sort of thing, not what hobby type people wanted. At least back then they acknowledged that there were people who did electronics as a hobby.  :icon_rolleyes:

Part of the Tandy "family" is the chain of leather goods stores.  Given the omnipresence of China in all other segments of the clothing market, what has happened to the leather goods outlets?

BTW, this thread ought to be in the Lounge too. :icon_wink:

Hey how do you guys check if stores are closing near you? There are about a billion RS stores near me, so it only stands to reason that one or two are closing.
