Guv'nor clips!!! Original vs clone (with and without LED clipping)

Recorded DI into my Mackie 400F, used the free Voxengo Boogex plugin to add cabinet modeling for a more realist sound (impulse model taken from some unnamed 4X12 cab...).

Tried to get the same tone but it's kind of hard since my clone has 25K tone pots vs 10K for the stock one. Volume is 100% on both pedals, you'll notice the clone is mucher louder. Why? I don't know... Maybe the OPA2604 opamp I have in there can get closer to voltage rail, maybe the LEDs I got have a higher turn-on voltage... or maybe the battery in the original is dying... What I noticed also, when looking at the waveforms, is that the clone puts out a much more dynamic signal. Other difference is the use of films caps on the clone (vs a few ceramic ones on the original)

First low gain clips, this is with the gain at roughly 30%. This is how I used my original live, as an OD boost in front of my Marshall DSL50 green channel:

These next clips are with gain at 100%, tone control unchanged.

This last one is with the LEDs taken out of the circuit (a switch lifts their connection to ground, it works cause they stop lighting up)

See how the LEDs don't seem to be adding much?

My next plan is to try and take the tone stack out to see how much the output will be affected... Just need to short C13 and leave the treble pot at 100%!

The Playing is awsome! great riffing...

the tone though - I didn't like very much, I guess that on a real amp it'll sound better

Thank you

Yeah, I've never heard a SS overdrive that really sounds good by itself. I only used the cab modeling section of Boogex so we would only hear the Guv's own distortion.

I'll try to make a few clips with the Marshall this weekend if I can find some time. This pedal is really only good in front of a tube amp IMHO.

So I've heard :)
I'll have to give this one a shot on the Breadboard. Is it the same as the Marshall Drive Master?

I remember seeing a Drivemaster schematic and it was very similar. I built mine using the schematic on GGG (actually, I used their PCB).

Here are some clips through a tube amp. A Marshall DSL50 in this case. Miked with a SM57 against the cloth, just slightly off axis, and a small condenser as a room mic. Only processing applied was a bit of hi-passing because the low-end was just too boomy (still is, my garage seems to have a big resonance at G# frequency, you can hear it and see it on the waveform). No compression to keep all the dynamic so clips might seem a bit quiet. Guitar is a LP with old strings.

First the "green" channel alone (also known as "crunch")

Let's add the original Guv'nor in front (output 100%, gain 25-30%)

Now the cloned Guv'nor (same settings, LED clipping turned off).

And just for kicks, since I had it beside me, a MXR Wylde Overdrive, same settings

And for comparison, this is the red channel (also known as Lead 1) with no pedal. So this is stricly tube OD, no SS clipping here.

The recording is not perfect, I just stuck a mic there and the amp was hardly working (volume on 1.5, just moved here, don't want to upset neighbors  ;) ). At a higher volume the sound is much more "lively" and dynamic.
Listening at the recordings, the Wylde and the unboosted Red channel seem the best, but I can assure you that on a stage, they are both too "small" sounding compared to the Guv'nor paired with the Green channel... imho of course.
