Who built a polyphase from my layout?

I would be interested to hear of anyone who took the time to build the polyphase based on my layout. Those who were interested in doing so and didnt, why not? I am just curious to see if my work helped anyone and if I could improve my projects in any way?

Needs more dragons? :)

I would be interested ... in fact I just had a look for your layout, where is it?

the board is etched and drilled and awaits population, i should be able to give you feedback in a couple of days. it was just too hot here lately to solder (my hand-sweat is very agressive and literally corrodes things in front of your eyes - just ask my bass strings  :icon_lol:), and of course, there was the soccer world-cup  :icon_razz:.
also, the only things i still don´t have (had to get some of those unusual resistor values) are the 15µF electros (i know, i could use 10+4.7 in parallel, but i´m a bit of an aesthetic perfectionist), i´d have to mail-order them.

but i´ll keep you posted, and if you don´t know already, your work is very much appreciated !

cheers,

Yeah, its still there half finished. Im waiting to see if my home-made optos work in the mcmeat ive finished before I complete the PPhase. Unless you know somewhere that sells VTLxxx/2 cheap? (xxx cos I cant remember)

I've got everything I need to build it, but the hobbies get back-burnered during the summer months.  I keep fooling myself into thinking I'll be able to do things while the kids are on summer break, but it never works out.

I've been wanting to build one of these for some time--I expect to build this hopefully before the end of the year (Brass Master, Neutron, and Rocktave already in the queue).  Oh, and maybe building an ASM-2 analog synth.  And maybe refurbishing the ARP 2600 that's been waiting patiently.  Busy, busy, busy....

Thanks for sharing!  :icon_biggrin:

Joe

I ran into that as well.  I modded the artwork to allow for the 10+4.7 combos.

hi nelson,
i built it. it's still unboxed (waiting for one of those new bigger than bb boxes from steve bear). i havn't used any shielded wire yet and it does tick at high speed on the regular LFO and then at the max it gets a bit space-ship-ey oscillation which i like. i can hear the trigger click in the env mode too. maybe this will clear up with shielded wire and a box... anyway, it's also got quite a low output but i havn't bothered debugging it yet (i just turn up my amp and it goes woaaaahwoowwobblwobblewobble. tonefrenzy said sonic waterfall... yeah!) i think it has a bit of a bi-phase sound to it, just the tone of the shift, not like the small stone.

as far as the project file goes, i got it PMed from Zero the Hero (i can't get into his site) and there was no schemo, which would have been handy once or twice. i'm unaware if it has one these days. i found one on a german synth site though.

i'm planning on adding an external envelope in, to have the phaser after fuzzez with a dry envelope input split from before the dynamics disappear. a switch between envelope extraction from the ext in or the regular in.

anyway, darn good work i can't wait for the ULTIMA!!! (does that have external env. control?  :icon_biggrin:)
thanks

I have had one detailed build report which says there is no tick and the effect is way above unity gain. At the far end of the sweep LFO the LFO seems to get too fast for the optocouplers to keep up.

The ultima does have an external input for the envelope.

I have a huge load of CLM8200/2 I got from ebay.

You can get the vactrols from smallbear, the CLM8200/2 are also available at banzai.

good-o. i'll get it working right when it comes time to box it. to tell the truth, if i had to put up with the tick and add an LBP for unity gain, i reckon i would still give it a good dose of useage. it does sound top notch (sometimes puns just happen...)
thanks

woolley

ok, it's in a box. debugged and has a touch over unity gain so i added a volume pot. doesn't tick at all (no need for shielded wire). sounds great. splendid.
thanks for working on these old EH bits.

How does the envelope-controlled modulation sound, woolley? Does the phasing slow down or fade away?
Did you use vactrols? If so where did you get them?
Can't wait till mines finished

the envelope controls the height of the phase shift. like an envelope filter, but an envelope phaser. sounds a bit vocal. the modulation comes in as set by the env.mod. to give you an idea, the attack sweeps it up and during decay, the mod can kick in as per the mod rate. so it goes:

woaaaahwoowwobblwobblewobble
attack--decay-------------------------

in env mode, you can have the sensitivity low so it doesn't sweep with the envelope and just use the mod.rate as a second LFO, so with the env/lfo switch you can have two different speeds on a switch. it's fairly tweakable within its limitations. does that make sense? well, it's not a two trick pony. maybe 5 tricks?

and i used 3x the VTL5C3/2 from small bear

I set my Frog Filter to do that, it was a combination of the Bi Filter Follower and an LFO mixed in with the envelope CV.

I am putting something similar in an OTA based phaser I am designing.

Damn, the price for those things is rough tho, init! Someone really needs to find a modern cheap replacement for those sort of optocouplers, there must be one surely. OTA seems to be on its way out too.

You can get three "matched" VTL5C3/2 for $10 from here

http://www.lsound.com/Parts.htm

They were used in the MXR100.

Shipping is a bit steep at $6 so throw some other stuff in there too, to make it worthwhile.
