I am building a Ross Compressor. I have made sure my caps and diodes measure closly. I need to get closly matching transistors,. I am told,.. for this build to sound smooth and not jittery.
However I do not have an "hfe" funtion on my cheap multimeter. Can I use my multimeter in another way to achive the same goal?

yes, you can use R.G.'s little circuit for measuring the current gain of a Ge transistor.  for Si transistors, there is no leakage.  so it is even easier.  see Selecting germanium transistors for Gain and Leakage for your Fuzz Face Clone

GM is correct, but I'd still recommend springing for a meter that will read hfe and diode voltage drop.  You will find it immensely useful in identifying pinouts, and component orientation on parts whose markings are worn or otherwise illegible, as well as in component matching/selection.  A suitable meter can be easily bought for under $30 these days; often for much less in many areas.
