Thanks for the feeback Gus, first stage was based on the ROG Matchbox stage one, which is an approximation
of the EF86 pentode preamp tube, "tuned a little" by ear rather than text book ! 
First 1M is an "always use one" pulldown resistor.
The rest is an approximation of the G1 ( not G5 ) valve preamp and just adjusted by ear.
I understand your point about IDSS measurement and using source r more than just drain r for bias setup.
Next build, I'll take some measurements and use more trimpots

Are you saying that the 560k to Q2 is not required at all ??

Seems fairly 'noiseless' at the 'mo .
