Trying to get a higher gain transistor into my DS-1 but i can't find any info on the web or in search.  I tried 2n5088 but i got a super low output.  I know it's lower gain but still...

any help?

I presume you observed the different pinout on the 2SC2240 and the 2N5088?

Good advice, cd!

The 2N5088 is a high gain device. The two higher gain transistors that I might recommend are the 2N5089 and the MPSA18. But it would be very unusual that a 2N5088 would not replace any other transistor and be "low gain" if you didn't get the pinout or biasing wrong.

Check the pinout!

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

i thought i did.  Maybe i didn't or did something terribly wrong!  I know when i used my gain checker on my DMM the meter said 1 and lit up the little battery symbol.  Not sure what that's about!  I didn't get any reading when i flipped it around.  I'll have to get a datasheet and check it out.  Thanks guys for pointing out my stupidity!!   :icon_redface: :icon_redface:

The 2SC2240 is ECB, the 2N5088 is EBC.  I don't remember that gain stage in the DS-1 exactly but IIRC put a 2N5088 in there and you'd have something like a common base amplifier (I think?) which would explain the very low output.

ah shit, well that makes perfect sense then!  I'll wire somethin up and see what I get.  I already lowered the emitter resistor on Q2 to get more gain out of the thing but too low and it just adds a ton of high end and hiss and likes to feedback.  And not good feedback, a really piercing one.  Maybe some new trannies are just the ticket.  Thanks for the info!!!
