I was just looking though some of the mods to the Boss DS1 and there are quite a few that I like.

Is it possible to do more mods to a pedal like this after doing the Keeley/Ultra/All-Seeing Eye Mod or will add these mods put together sound bad?

I know after doing that mod that the pedal will be packed with 3 new toggle switches and a new LED so space will be an issue.

That's perfectly possible.
You can do as many mods at the same time as you want.
It's up to you to decide wether you like the sound or not ...

Just out of curiosity, where are you gonne put 3 switches ? And what will they switch ?

I gave up modding my DS1 when I realized than after all the mods and tweaking, it STILL was a DS1 :icon_mrgreen:

This is, raw distortion, too much mid-bass, and a fuzzy edge.

The best mod you can do to a DS1 is to change whatever humbucking pickup you happen to have in your guitar by a low output ,middy pickup such as the Dimarzio Double Whammy or Fred, or a SD Custom Custom. The DS1 HATES high output or bass-heavy pickups.

well modding is improving a pedal...not making it something else. it's to get a better sound out of it.

I was looking to swap out all my original single coils with something else on my PRS SE guitar but its pricey and with the FXs out there now you can just about make any sound you want with any guitar and amp.

Nice to see my site is getting some use :D

The explanation for the three switches is at the bottom of the page, I did some circuit bending on it and used a toggle for switching between capacitors :)

It can have 3, but I decided to leave the third one inside the pedal, the clipping for the ASE uses an led which is on the front, the Ultra has one in series which I left inside the pedal and the blue one is just the check LED. If you need any help just send me an e-mail or post here :)

Oh and the sides have enough room for 2 or three switches each, so you can have 6 on the sides and one or two at the most on the top - its difficult to fit on the top though. The sides have plenty of room, so circuit bending, cap switching or even the ultra mod can be left on the side if you like.

Lp_man

Did that answer your question? I wasn't sure if I did, but please feel free to give me a shout if you need any help with the mods :)

that was great info but i answered my own question a day ago...i read at the last few pages of the book where it explained the function of all the switches so i installed one switch as to the plans.

My friend is buying a DS1 today or tomorrow...we're going to clip the diodes and one cap. It makes it a HUGE booster (clean gain out the @$$), with a little bonus of being a treble booster too. When the tone knob is all the way counterclockwise, the signal passes straight through. The more to the right you go, the more trebly you get.

Quite possibly one of the easiest mods I've ever heard of.

Lp_man

Sounds cool! What parts do you take out exactly if you don't mind me asking?

Damn, I have the mod somewhere...I know you take out...I wanna say D4 and D5...the clipping diodes, basically. And then a cap, maybe C12? Don't do it until I can verify tomorrow with him :P I don't want you murdering your pedal.

Lp_man

Me either! :D I was just curous because I've never heard of it before but it would be a cool addition to put on a pedal if you could put it on a switch.

343 Salty Beans

You can put it on a switch easily...but my friend just decided to leave it all out (easy for me  ;D )

D4 and D5 and C12 all get removed.

We did it the other day to my guitarists DS-1. Get's a HELLUVA lotta gain, and some greatsounding natural breakup at the higher level settings. And the treble boosting part works really well too...it's a really simple thing to do and it's a big improvement to the pedal in both our opinions.

The op amp is going to cause some distortion as well if you just clip the clipping diodes.  If you felt like replacing the 741 you could get an even cleaner boost, but that's probably too much work given the end result you're going for...

I thought about that, too. He's running through a nice old silvertone amp (very vintage sound, and not just the mojo aspect of 'vintage) which is already got some slight breakup, so the very small amount added isn't really very noticable IMO. The op amp really only comes into play noticably when you crank the distortion knob past 12'00; even then, there's only a mild overdrive (which brings another new aspect to this mod, since this new OD sounds really great with his setup). the distortion knob only has to be tweaked a tiny bit past minimum, because there's a huge amount of gain on tap for the booster aspect of this mod  8) it's pretty freakin rad.

If you don't like the sound of your DS-1 but don't feel like losing money selling it after your original investment, do this to it. really worth it IMHO.
