Hello fellow DIY'rs;
Here's a circuit I found on Doug H's page that I cannot beleive has been somewhat overlooked by the DIY community!
When I first saw this on Doug's page and heard the soundclips I was floored and came here to search for info on it and....NOTHING.
So, here it is, The BRICK;

I am very impressed by this circuit.
I used my OC140 that I purchased from Aron and this thing just came alive.
I left out C1 to make the circuit a bit brighter as it was a bit dull sounding to my ears.
The input pot could probably be left out by some of you more adventurous folk for wide open fuzz tones!
It's not over the top fuzz on it's own but, it will fuzz for sure! On lower settings it takes on the persona of a milder OD but has a nice Germanium sound to it while retaining some of the guitar's clean tone as well, almost "Bluesy".
Check out the clips on Doug's page;

I don't think my layout matches the schem exactly as far as component order ( hey, I'm still a rookie at layouts!) but, my layout here is verified and is currently posted in my layouts gallery with permission from Mr. Hammond.
Thanks again to him for a great circuit and for permission to present my layout to you fellas!

you are becoming quite the overacheiver there Mr. Mark...:)  Those clips are pretty well done too!
Breadboards are as invaluable as underwear - and also need changed... -R.G.

Pretty nice there Mark- next thing you'll be the next Dragonfly of PCB with these layouts your churning out! Since the folk fuzz is kinda my fuzz to beat right now, how would you compare this and the folk fuzz?

I think it's based on the old Harmonic Percolator..... definitely sounds like an upgraded version if it is!!! Great job on the layouts, Mark. I still need to build up a OD 250 because of your previous post and I'm in the middle of etching my first successful case (so far) thanks to your tutorial. If there was a "Most Motivating Builder" of the year award, you might get it!!

Mark , that gives me a GREAT idea for your etched box for this .... Brickwork etching pattern !!

( think Pink Floyd's the wall on a pedal top )

Nice job on the layout, Mark.

I'm not claiming any originality here. It's basically a Percolator based on one of Alf's schematics he traced. I think all I changed was the clipping diodes, which improved the overall gain.

The reason I called it "The Brick" was because:

1. I was experimenting with textured paint and that's what it ended up looking like: http://home.cfl.rr.com/dbhammond/brick.gif

2. The guy who clones percs was making some noise in the "reviews" section (which doesn't exist anymore) about how he got the name "harmonic percolator" trademarked, blah, blah... Life's too short and I figured it's easier to change the name than to waste time arguing with cloners about who owns what (which is oxymoronic anyway...). In addition I avoid the endless admonitions that the schem is "incorrect", etc, etc. I dont' really care. In & of itself, this sounds cool and is somewhat unique.

I would also recommend Tim Escobedo's "Harmonic Jerkulator" if you are interested in this sort of thing. His uses easy to find Si transistors.

Thanks Newbie, I thought of you when I first fired this thing up!
It's like the Folk Fuzz but, not the same....I think it's a bit more "natural" sounding, not as bright but very bluesy.
The interesting thing about the tone of the Brick is that Germ kinda tone from the OC44.
Make sense??
I would go and chuck my Folk Fuzz out but, this one's a keeper too!

Doug, Many thanks for posting the schem and sharing this circuit.
I think it sounds Great!!
Got any more little "gems" like this stashed away??
Post up some more, I'll do some more Layouts and then, you can kill the threads again  :icon_lol:
