This has bugged me for some time....

Ok, it may be but a detail, and I have no science to offer in argument.

But....I have often seen people using sticky back pads to mount PCBs.
So, I am about to box up a whole lot of builds and it seems a very convieniant way to go. I am thinking of using auto body trim double sided tape to mount my boards , mostly "B" type enclosures and on the back of pots.

The foamy tape is extremely sticky and should give an excellent hold, but it is also kinda "wet" where the sticky stuff is. It will be directly contacting the solder joints and traces in some places.

So, my question: Is there any detrimental effect from using this ? Stray capacitance etc?

It could add some stray capacitance. Every insulating material except gasses and vacuum increases the capacitive effect of the volume it occupies. So the stray capacitance will go  up. Whether it goes up enough to hurt or not depends on the circuit. If you're not using FETs or JFET input opamps, I wouldn't worry about it until this guess is proved wrong.

Some adhesives are slightly conductive. That will throw stuff off. Measure it by sticking your ohmmeter probes on the sticky side quite close together but not touching. Then see if that reads more or less than max on the biggest resistance scale. If it's off-scale on the high side, you're OK.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

I've used those sticky tapes /3M/ in some of my builds /even in tube amps/ and I have no problems so far. Be careful while positioning them because once they stick to the surface it could be a big PITA to remove them.

Tha 3M stuff is great use it on every pedal!!  Lasts forever and will hold down a batt. clip as well!!!.....really good stuff never had a conductance problem :icon_mrgreen:
