Hi guys.
I've been at this for about 8 months and keep hearing about Tim's Uglyface.  I finally decided to build one and am quite entertained!  I put together the layout/PCB below and perfed it up (10x20 holes).  I assumed linear pots throughout...but built with some log (what I had).  I also socketed the Vactrol so I could try different opto-isolator combos (I only have one VTL5C3 and need to make another trem lune...).  I also used RadioShack LM386 and 555CN IC's.
As I'm sure most of you have read, this thing makes some strange noises!  From gross mean fuzz to old 8-bit Atari sounding stuff - quite fun.  I'm not sure if I'll box it up...but I just had to build one.

Enjoy.

I see 2 pads for V+. Are you using two batteries?

mydementia

Nope - just needed to add a jumper from the +9V source.

ildar

Gotcha.
Another question-you spec a 1n4001 (as a protection diode I assume), will an LED or 1n914 work there?

I'm starting to build this and I have a doubt!

in the layout above, from R2 to the F2 connection there is a blue jumper, but it "touches"  one of the C6 end  as well, is this right? or it's just a jumper from R2 to F2?

thks in advance,

Andy

Looks like the lower jumper goes to the upper C6 junction and the upper jumper goes to the IC2 pin 3/F2 junction.  Just use a piece of jacketed wire for the upper jumper so it doesn't 'touch' the C6 junction.

Haven't looked at this one in a while...but I think that's right.

Thanks  That's a mistake I was going to make for sure!

sorry I'm  such a pain, I still have some questions about this circuit...

I dont quite get some of the wiring...

   V2 goes to ground?

do I put a jumper to rely the  two +9V?

so both input and output jacks are mono?

Thaks in advance for  your help!

Andy

ildar

V2 goes to output.
Yes, you will need a jumper for 9V+
You can use a stereo jack for input, wire it in the standard fashion.

BTW, thank you mydementia for your help with my build. I built mine using your PCB layout, and I love it!
This is a must-build for everyine, if just for shits and giggles.

mydementia

ildar - glad you like it.
I'm glad I could give something back to this community that's given me so much!!

How's it coming mongo?

If you really wanted this thing to get crazy, you could probably utilize pin 7 on the 386 to make some crazy oscillation noises, a la Parallel Universe style.

sucess!!!

squeakings, squealings, blips blops and fuzzzzzz!!!!! I love it! I think I will rename mine "8bit fuzz" when I put in in a box... :icon_mrgreen:

this thing makes wonderful sounds, exactly what I expected of it, I'll try it tomorrow with some machine drums and synths...

I wonder if there's a way to adapt the FREQ pot into a volume or expression pedal, I love the tone qualities when I sweeeeep the freq!

Thank you very much everybody (designers for an astounding device, builders, fellow diy'ers) for you help!

Rock on!

this is old but I guess it's worth to ask...

I find that my uglyface is LOUD! I have to use it with the volume at 1 or 2,after that it's just too loud,

it is a way to tame the uglyface's output?

Thanks,

Andy

John Lyons

Assuming there are no mistakes in the build you could use a smaller volume pot. Try 50KA or 25KA

or put a resistor before the pot :)

i did this with a pvm i built for someone, it helped allot :)

a 25k resistor for instance?  I guess I'll try several measures. thank you for your answers

Everyone has made the same complaint about loudness.

If it's too loud, you're too old!
Try a little tenderness.

b2thea

in the pwm i built a 100 k resistor in series, before the volume pot...

it was needed, the thing on itself was way to loud
