but did van halen use that frankenstrat with only a volume knob?

but yes, that is exactly what im thinking of.  only, how can i make this into a stompbox / speed controlled footswitch thingy

LyleCaldwell

He probably used the Destroyer for that track.  I'm sure an EVH freak will be along soon to clarify.

You can't do that fast enough with your foot - better to put that kind of control on a guitar.  But it can be done in a pedal.  All you need is a single pole single throw normally open momentary switch.  Connect one lug to ground and the other to the hot signal.  Maybe stick a 47K resistor across the lugs if you experience any popping.

well im thinking more like a set speed being off, then footswitch forward to increase the rate.  but im starting to see what you are saying, thanks!

Seljer

Go find a choppy sounding tremolo pedal, and add an expression pedal for the speed control if you can't be bothered to bend over to change it

or just do the killswitch thing, if you're guitar hasn't got a gibson type setup with 2 volume knobs+switch you can easily get a mini SPST switch in there that allows for a ton of effects (look at Tom Morello or Buckethead for example....)

Here's a pic of Bucket's guitar.  Note the red killswitch.

Correct.  And then he later ruined that guitar by cutting out a big section from the back -- he apparently is still bummed about doing that.

it wouldnt sound the same at all. considering how much wood was cut, im sure i wouldnt be fond of it as well.

The pickup selector switch "chop" thing is the same thing Ace Frehley does.

And Randy Rhoades, Carlos Cavazo..... Jimi H also did it on "Voodoo Child" but didn't have the luxery of turning the neck pickup volume down on a strat so you don't hear the "chop", just the switch clicking and tone changes.

Seljer

and I've heard Jimmy Page do it in some live versions of Dazed and Confused

and Matt Bellamy from Muse

I popped a DPDT in my pawn shop Tele to bypass the pots.  This allows me to turn the volume knob all the way down and toggle between full up and full off.  I've also found that the bypassed signal is a tad brighter and punchier than the regular signal with both controls at full.

no sir, thats from the wah. the front feet are taken off, so its easier to click on and off the wah. try it, youll hear it.

What's the story about destroying the Destroyer? ???

Also keep in mind though, that EVH was a hardware hacker too-  IIRC he didn't use a single piece of equipment in stock form.  EVERYTHING was modified in some way/shape/form/another.  He might have put a toggle switch onto whatever guitar he was playing.  He's crazy like that.

Oh well.  When you're EVH you can afford to replace your tubes after every show, eh?

and we can't forget the Ibanez Talman (and later all his guitars) Tom Morello uses   I used to use that effect myself.. but I hardly belong in all that company
