anyone know any good sources?

i'm looking to find cheaper alternatives to banzai located near/in the uk. The taiwanese copies would be ok too.

I say Smallbear. A great place and I never had a problem there as compared to some horror stories I hear about ebay and others.
"I think somebody should come up with a way to breed a very large shrimp. That way, you could ride him, then after you camped at night, you could eat him. How about it, science?"

I haven't tried smallbear, I get my Hammond type boxes from mouser.com. I get the BUD (Taiwan?) versions which are a few bucks cheaper.

Diecast enclosures @ http://www.maplin.co.uk. Try them, I believe they have most of the parts you'd need.

Haven't ever ordered from these guys...

They have what looks to be good prices on boxes
and offer painted ones too.

Sorry not in the UK.

To learn more do a forum search for
pedalpartsplus.com
there are several posts about them.

Seems like several folks around here have gotten good deals on boxes from eBay.
But you have to buy a fixed quantity.
It's time to buy a gun. That's what I've been thinking.

Who makes the enclosures that Lovepedal (www.lovepedal.com) uses?  They appear to have a folded metal 'tab' or some such - like this:   http://www.lovepedal.com/fab50.htm

Just curious - I've not seen these in other places.

I've tried :

http://www.musikding.de

http://uk.farnell.com - a *bit* dearer and have a £25 minimum order for free shipping - as do:

http://www.rapidonline.com

But I have to say that Smallbear are very quick shipping to here in the UK, no minimum order, and the exchange rate is very good for us at the moment. Their parts are very good too.

£9 for all the bits is a bit optimistic though...

yeah, its just that banzai do enclosures for about 3 pounds, and it seemd reasonable to assume that its possible to get pots and knobs for less than 50p each, which leaves another 3 pounds for jack inputs...

it is optimistic, but thats why i was asking.

You never go wrong with smallbear.  Steve isn't just a guy that sells parts, he's one of us.  :icon_cool:

I have dealt with Kirk at Pedal Parts Plus, and he is a great guy.  Last week, he had a delay in a shipment of 1590DD boxes, and was concerned about my order not being filled in time.  So he e-mailed me and explained the situation, then offered me options which ranged from shipping the order when the boxes arrived, a partial refund, or a refund on the entire order.

I called him to discuss the options, and he was very friendly, and not at all put out by the fact that I opted to cancel the order (time issue with completing a project).  It is pretty cool that someone has good prices, is easy to deal with and cares about giving the customer what they want.  And, with inexpensive enclosures and $4 Blue 3PDT switches, you can't go wrong.  (I just saw that they can do powder coating and screen printing, too.)

They have been starting to stock more items, so it looks like we'll have another good supplier for the parts that we go through regularly.  Will they put Small Bear out of business?  Not likely, but competition is a good thing for everyone..especially the consumer.

actually i think it's weird people like hammond boxes that much. i bought them now but they have way more faults (like dents and ugly edges) than the taiwanese enclosures. so i'll definatly buy those again next time

I second you on those ugly edges. These things need some serious chiseling to make them look acceptable. Whereas all my taiwaneses are flawless.

haven't ordered from them but http://www.effectsconnection.com no idea what there like but the 3PDT work out about £2-3 without postage! if you bought in bulk you might get  a discount on postage.
that seems a good way to do it! you could put together a kit of parts  to do maybe two pedals and the postage might be cheap enough. just a suggestion

DuncanM

I've looked at  http://www.effectsconnection.com  but the problem is that their shipping charges to the UK are "prohibitive"...  :icon_cry:

disto

isn't it about $4.5 for a switch and postage is $2 +$0.15 for every other item.  if you only bought one switch it would word out £3.60 and a basic DPDT from maplin costs about £5 (without packing)! how cheap do you need?! the more you buy the more you'll save i got some delay chips for £0.60 the otherday  ;D now i have to build 25 delay units

How about Eddystone boxes? They're sold in the UK in place of the Hammond 1590 series, IIRC (Hammond bought Eddystone in 1998, but continued to use the Eddystone brand in the UK). Their part numbers are 27134PSLA (1590B) and 29830PSLA (1590BB) - they might be cheaper than "imported" Hammonds. I think Rapid used to carry them.

DuncanM

An Eddystone BB type box from "RAPID" would be £4.23 +VAT

and then £3.45+VAT for delivery .......

That's your 9 quid right there. Pots at about 50p each, cheap knobs from 14p, cheap plastic jack sockets are 30p, but no footswitches - that would have to come from elsewhere (with another delivery charge).

markm

I think Eddystone's are still *slightly* different than the Hammonds are they not?
I like the Eddystone enclosures alot, mainly because they were a little bit more square on the edges.
Maybe this has changed by now so.....who knows?
