Tychobrahe Octavia problems...

Hey my friend is building a Tychobrahe Octavia but having problems getting the exact transformer. He is using a 1:5 (1K-5K) rather than a 1:3 (500-1.5K) and not getting a strong octave sound, even though a faint doubling sound can be heard though it doesn't sound like an octave. Is this normal for this type of effect. He's using this circuit diagram:
