I built the Atari Punk Console and my son really likes it, problem is it has to be connected to one of my guitar amps in order for him to play with it. Does anyone know of a small amp that I could build and then box it up with the Atari Console and a small speaker? Something easy and small (low wattage), Many thanks guys.

cool that your son likes this, I  built one and it's been a big hit with my friends, everybody loves that thing.  Anyway, here's a link to a small, easy amp from ROG: http://www.runoffgroove.com/ruby.html --that's just one of many cool little amps they have posted, should work great for your purposes.

    well, ditto then...

Do the Ruby! It's superb... ;)

The ruby should work fine, but the 556 will drive a speaker directly. From the output (pin 9) connect a 10uf or so elect. cap (neg to pin 9) from there a 5k pot to a 8 ohm speaker with the other lead of the speaker to the +9v power supply. This is the orginal schematic from Forrest Mimms' Timer Circuit Radio Shack book.

P.s. You're a very cool dad!

Thanks for all the help guys ! Man, you guys are fast ! I have built the Ruby for use as a guitar amp, and it is indeed a great little amp.

Not to sound like a dummy but... Can you delve into what a 556 is a little more?

a 556 is a dual 555 timer, which a neat little IC that can do an entire bunch of things (mainly related to timers and osciallators)
