the noise seems to be related to the down mod. I'll record a passage later and post it up.

heres a sample
note in the recording i turned the mic pre up a fair bit for a start (before i play) and fiddle with the guitar volume pot so you can hear the effect)
the noise i dont like is the little decay noise (sounds like ripple to my ears but i could be wrong) after the chords are played.
Kinda spoils the nice wah ing.
Im certain its related to the transistor 470uf cap mod.
It dissapears when i remove the transistor (mind you so does the wah)
i tried a led in the place of the transistor . same thing . Schucks.
i tried moving the r13 it stopped wahing
i removed R13 it wahs but i still have the noise.
so i put it back as per Robs Schematic.

What makes the ripple is the envelope detector. You can use bigger caps C3, C4 at the detector to minimize ripple, like in a power supply, but you'll increase the decay time...

There was a nice explanation about how the fretboard vibration, even a fly over the breadboard can introduce noise into the envolope follower. If I could remember who wrote it...  >:(

QuoteSo just to clarify since the schemo isnt numbered

thanks

Yeap. Now you need to do the same with Rob's schematic  ;D

i've soldered in 2x 4u7 for c3 and c4 and it does nothing to get rid of the ripple.
the ripple is coming from the transistor everytime i remove it the ripple goes away. It doesnt wah anymore after the trannies removed even with the switch in the up position which i find odd.
theres still some room on my perfboard so i might try your suggestion later but i'd really like to get rid of the ripple first.
I noticed Jimi did a daughter board mod and his work. whats going on?

Freppo

Hi folks,

I just want to share a vero layout I did which includes the mods by Dead Astronaut and small enough to easily fit a 1590B.  :)

However, I can't get the down mode working at all, so I would appreciate if anyone can have a look at it.
The up mode works fine and it sounds nice. I tried breadboarding the circuit with the same result. :/
The only things I've added are a 5817 for reverse polarity protection and a 100uF cap between V+ and ground

cheers

Rich,
I missed your last post.
I was experimenting with transistors as variable resistors in another autowahs, and I had ripple issues. I tried different transistors and gain until I found a good one.

Thanks Mac
When I'm done hacking this envelope filter hacked wah of mine I'll try some differant trannys

Someone younger, eagle eyed, to verify Freppo's vero?  :(

sounds like freppo didn't get it working on breadboard too...hmmmm

so that may be the problem...i just can't get my head around vero layouts.. :)

well, I'm late to the party. I looked at freppo's layout (without the mods circuit), and I obviously got stuck at "the" 2n3904.

so, rob, can you do some voltage measures on that transistor, just for shinys and giblets? THEN we can compare some .....

I couldn't see anything dogsballing on the vero, freppo.

i haven't got that pedal now..

sorry.. :)

Thanks! I'm away on vacation for a couple of weeks so I will pick up this  project again when I get home.
Perhaps I'll just omit the down mode..

just for me, freppo, when you gets home, can you try shifting the switched connection from the C to the B, and leave C open? or anyone w/ this on the bredboard?

don't bother, it don't work the way I was thinking. which was along the lines mentioned here:

http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=106637.msg965491#msg965491

I was hacking about trying to get the E-B connections to work, and managed to smoke-emit one of my favourite pots. eau-de-roland, peee-uww.

Digging up this old thread again.

Still no luck with the down mode. So I decided to omit it from my vero layout.
I like few controls on a pedal anyway. :) The finished and verified vero can be found at:
http://parasitstudio.weebly.com/stripboard-layouts/phuncgnosis-auto-wah
It's a nice sounding simple auto wah. I'm going to box mine soon. :)
Cheers / Fredrik
