Just found my self thinking.

Whats the difference between home made and Boutique?

Answer...
The price....

No. seriously. Anny thoughts out there..?
What does one put in the phrase Boutique?

Seljer

boutique is usually the following: limited quantity, supposedly high quality, and a high price to go with that too

Though there is many other factors in play on the boutique side though, and hype is one of them. There have been many threads on this topic in the past too:

Been through this a dozen times or more.  Not to be dismissive, but maybe a search through the archives would be better than launching into it again.  Some of the best responses have already been given and are unlikely to be offered up here in response to your question.  It IS a valid question.  You just may be disappointed by what you get in response because, as topics go, it sort of got "used up". :icon_sad:

Some notes:

  • DIY: You, me
  • Boutique: ZVex, Fulltone, Cornell amplifiers
  • Mass Production: Marshall, BOSS, Behringer

For DIY, time is NOT money. We can happily spend 100 hours building a single stompbox. We only pay for parts. We typically use medium to high quality parts.

For Boutique builders, time IS money. With non-automated (handmade) production, the cost of parts will be insignificant in comparison to the cost of manufacturing each product. So, they might as well use high quality parts.

For mass production, time AND parts are money. Price will guide every aspect of the design, since the price margin on each unit will be very low. Any choice between cost and quality will always favor cost.

Of course, some of the Boutiquers started out like us here.
Funny as it may seem, they weren't born as Boutiquers.......well, maybe Keeley was  :icon_lol:

Diy: Skinny, cap
Boutique: Fat, bowler hat
Mass production: Terribly fat, top hat, cigar

DIY: everything between crapy builds and self acclaimed superior quality
Boutique: everything between appraised crap and superior quality.
Mass production: The perfect tradeoff between reliability and affordability.

I think boutique is a term that has become highly contaminated over the last few years
More stuff, less fear, less  hassle and less censoring? How 'bout it??. To discuss what YOU want to discuss instead of what others decide for you. It's possible...

But not at diystompboxes.com...... regrettably
