Volume pots; what's the difference

OK, I know it is a simple question, but what are the differences between volume pot values? I need to place one in a Mini-Qtron and I just took a 100k pot (and it works) but why should I use another value? What is the theory behind it?

cutoff frequency of the high pass filter together with the output capacitor comes to mind.
i think its also the load for the output of the circuit?
