hi,

i modded a ds1 today with the sem and ultra mod with a switch.

i have one problem, everything works as it should but when the effect isn't engaged the clean tone is rather light and lacks a bit of volume.

Any ideas as to what it could be?

Does anyone know which resistors or caps change the tone?

thanks in advance

Can you describe these mods in more detail so we can help diagnose your problem?

Wait a minute....are you saying that when you bypass the pedal (not on), that the volume drops?  If so, that's not a problem with the pedal at all, that's a matter of dialing in the volume on the amp with the volume on the pedal so there is no drop from having the pedal on vs. off.

What I meant is that there is a considerable loss of volume when the pedal is not turned on compared to when i'm going straight into my amp.
I didnt mean when compared to having the effect on, sorry about the confusion, i should've made that more clear in my post.

I've tried my other ds1 and there is no problem with that one.

I'm wondering if it could be a component I changed?

Thanks

If I understand correctly, with the pedal in "bypass" mode, the volume is lower than if just going straight into the amp. I assume that the DS-1 uses FET switching, if so, that could have been damaged in the modding process. Do you have a full schem. of the DS-1? The only one I could find is unofficial.

ubersam

Going by that schem., FETs Q6 Q7 & Q8 are used in the switching. But before going into that, double check your work first. Make sure that there are no un-intentional shorts, etc. It does looks simple enough to do a true-bypass mod on it.

Yeah, since the level is fine going straight in to the amp, my thinking is the FET switching too.  If you can locate a stock unmodded DS-1, compare the FET voltages in bypass mode between yours and the unmodded one and go from there.

Also, you may want to start "unmodding" in reverse.  There is a chance one of your part changes caused this to happen and putting the stock values back in may reveal the problem.  Just be careful of the solder pads, they lift easy.

I've checked the pedal this morning and there doesn't seem to be any un-intentional shorts and everything is firmly in its place.

I forgot to mention. There is hardly any bass at all when im going through the pedal, clean or wet. And when the effect is on the treble and upper mids are ear bleedingly painful.

Does this point to anything?

vanhansen

Start replacing parts with the stock values starting with the last change.

When modding pedals or anything.....always always play through it after making the part change to make sure that A) it still works and B) nothing else got screwed up from changing that part.
