ok, not being very hot on the tech side of this stuff I was wondering... what effect does putting a resistor from collector to base have on a simple single transistor stage?

It pulls the base bias up toward the Collector.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

Here is a llttle info about the different ways of biasing a transistor

Check the second method compared to the first one

thanks for the replies - thats exactly what I was looking for Gilles C.

think I'll wire up those basic single transistor circuits and play with them to see what SOUND difference there is - afterall, thats all that matters right? (rhetorical question)

You got it right.

The best way to learn is to start with the basic circuits, play with them, have fun. Then, you"ll realise that everything you see is a lot of circuits that you understand.

The next step will be to understand how little circuits inter-react together when connected together.

Good luck and have fun.
