Just checked on ebay - a lot of people seem to be selling batches of Germ, but who knows what the gain and leakage are?  Personally I would be happy to pay more for Germs if I knew the specs first.

Does any paypal friendly online retail offer this service?  All this is, of course, in spite of my username!!

For tested Ge transistors, guranteed matched for particular circuits, there is always Steve... http://www.smallbearelec.com/home.html

Paul--

As always, thanks for the good reference. The Cave will continue to be a source of audited devices for a long time yet. However, this seemed to be a good time and place to raise an issue that has come up.

I have had to limit or turn down a few orders for multiple sets of Fuzz Face pairs and Tone Bender sets. I realize that people sometimes want to build pedals for friends, and, sometimes, God help them, having happy users encourages them to start a small pedal factory. But the "Cave" is just not geared for supplying commercial quantities of matched transistors. I emphasize: There Is No Shortage Of Raw Germanium Stock; I have enough to feed demand from hobbyists for a bunch of years, and, as the poster noted, E-Bay has, with its typical efficiency, provided another market.

The shortage is of the time of the chief Bear; the more time I give to cranking out these audited sets, the less I have to give to other business. As the company has grown, the time I have to give to the "other stuff" has grown proportionately.

I will probably offer a partial solution by posting a smaller "bag" of rough-sorted germanium. I now offer 30 pieces at $89.95 (SKU 0115). Maybe I need to offer 10 pieces at, say, $32.95. That should make it easier for other people to sort and audit for their own use, and possibly offer some devices for sale.

I appreciate the trust that the community has placed in my furry ears. However, "success" has forced me to give more attention to office work, and less to listening to growly noises.

I'll recommend against eBay for any purchases of lots of tubes or germies or anything of the sort. If it is not sold as meeting some guaranteed spec, you can be pretty sure you're getting somebody's culls. I am amazed at the lots of bad, noisy, leaky, microphonic crap out there.

Thanks guys for leading me to the Bear.  For a guy with furry ears, he sounds like he is running a great show!  Aint this what the web is supposed to be like?

I have been on this forum for less than 12 hours, and I have a suspicious feeling I might stay a while;)
