Yep, Vactrols are over $5 a piece while a decent LDR can be had for under $1

yeah I guess thats where it becomes difficult. Black tubing shoud do the trick.  ;)

In my experience you don't need to make the LED/LDR combination completely light proof. All I did with my easyvibe was tape the LDRs to the sides of the LEDS and it works great.

To throw another wrench into this discussion...I have read a couple long articles about Cadmium Sulphide (Radio shack and small bear) LDRs being more sensitive to green light than red. The Univibe used a bulb which is more in the white to yellow territory, closer to green...
