offboard wiring error to cause onboard voltage irregularities? I'm struggling with a TS8 in another thread, but wonder generally if that could happen.

Well yes, because the electrons can't tell if stuff is "on board" or "off board", it's all the same to them, it's just what is connected. In particular, if you wire a pot wrong or short it out, that might drain enough current to change the voltages around some transistor or whatever back on the board.
