Battery doors/covers

If this sounds like a silly newbie question, that's because I'm a silly newbie.

I've been working on making a Maestro Super-Fuzz clone as described on generalguitargadgets.com.  I've been having lots of fun with it, but I'm only concerned (so far) about one thing.  If I have to open the sucker up every time I want to change the battery, I'll be sorta bummed.  I've been able to find battery clips, snaps, and holders on lots of electronics suppliers sites, but not a little plastic door that would give me access to it without a screwdriver.  Any help?

A white one would be nice, aesthetically, but anything would be appreciated.

One should always have a screwdriver at a gig.
If nothing else, you can fight off the Drunks or Groupies with it  :icon_lol:

Heh, you actually have groupies? We have... female drunks instead. I'm seething with envy.

if your box is deep enought go for small bear battery drawer

Nothin' wrong with a female drunk now and then unless of course, she gets sick.  :icon_neutral:

How does the fuzz sound? Does it have any sufficient sustain? I'm just thinking what is gonna be my next built  ;D

sshrugg,

Once i've bought some battery clips directly from Sansamp... it is like you asked... you don't need any screwdriver to change the battery.

Thanks,

If you like being able to able to install a battery drawer, note that the 1790NS enclosure (my SKU 0300B) is deep enough to allow this. The battery drawer is SKU 0614, and it is not over-priced.

Wow! Thanks so much, everybody!  This is really helpful!

And I usually just use the house micstand on the groupies  ;)

I had been thinking for a while of cutting the lower portion of a 1590 B box bottom off and using this as a battery door cover. It seems the longer half of the bottom cover would need more support than two screws. I thought of putting a couple of pins in to support the end near the battery.

I feel like a year or two ago I saw someone here do just this.  Maybe a search will turn something up?  I'll take a look.

This is one of those who use that method.

I checked the Range Master and the Fuzz Face versions yesterday, so it was fresh in my memory...

Bulgin manufactures (or at least wholesales) quite a lot of battery cases, including ones with doors that are intended to be mounted in the sides or ends of stompboxes.

I like the look of the Cry Baby battery cover. It looks like you might be able to cut a hole in the bottom plate of a 1590 B box and fit it with the cover.

I think cutting the bottom plate into two pieces would require more than just the two screws to hold the larger half of the plate. I was thinking a small metal pin through the side of the box into the overlapping inner lip of the bottom plate might work. But tooling this would be a problem.

The crybaby sollution is EXACTLY what I was looking for.  In fact, I think that's the one that gave me the idea of having the battery attatched to the door, instead of sitting in the pedal.  I'm so surpised that they're selling them!  Kinda a bummer, though.  I can't do more than 1 in the quantity box for that album (I want all I can get. hahaha)

Not too much a fan of the box-cutting method.  Like soggybag mentioned, it seems like it'd be difficult to hold together.  To me, it doesn't seem like the most elegant solution, either.

Thanks again, everybody!  You gave me tons of ideas, and linked a lot of neat stores I didn't know about.  Rock 'n roll.

yeeshkul - when it's done I'll try and send ya samples.

How would you actually go about cutting the rectangular hole in the bottom of the enclosure in order to mount a battery door?

Some people find that the plastic CryBaby battery cover breaks very easily.

Nice idea though.

Btw, here is a battery cover I made to replace the original one I lost.

You could use a battery holder like the one in the next pictures and make a battery holder similar to the one of the CryBaby.

Just use a slightly larger metal cover and use a better screw.

Gilles, did that battery holder come with the black & red wires already attched? I have a lot of battery holders that look exactly like that, but have two very stiff metal leads coming out of the base intead, whihc CANNOT be soldered to - they must be intended for some crimping machine :icon_mad:
