Do ceramic disc caps add to the script-logo MXR Phase 90s mojo?

Apparently the original Script-Logo MXR Phase 90 had a Texas intruments UA741CP op amp, carbon comp resistors, and some NOS ceramic disc caps.  Many boutique pedal builders replace all the ceramic disc caps with metal film, but in the case of the Phase90, don't the ceramic disc caps play a huge part in the tone of the original script versions?

I guess one man's "mojo" is another man's noise  :icon_lol:
I don't know how much difference it would really make however, it may introduce more noise into the circuit.

markm,

Yeah, but maybe the extra noise makes it sound more vintage and less hi-fi?

When you say noise, do you mean it would have more hiss going on in the background?

Possibly more noise,
The traditional rule of thumb is that ceramics are the most noisey out of all the other choices out there but, I must admit that being the "old-school" kinda guy I am, I like ceramic caps!!
I've used them alot for small values but I've also used them in places that would make some folks on here go  :o
With that said, I also use carbon film resistors too as I don't notice any more noise when using my builds in a LIVE situation especially
in a smokey honky-tonk full of drunks.....now if they could only be less noisey!!  :icon_lol:

Ceramic caps probably do introduce some noise.  But what kind of noise?  In an article that broke the carbon comp mojo thing down (I believe RG wrote it over at GEO) he concludes that in certain sections of an "amplifier" with sufficient voltage to be bring out the characteristic, carbon comps do in fact introduce a type of subtle distortion/noise - that could be a bad or good thing but in that situation it seems to be "pleasing" to the human ear, or at least some ears.  Ceramic caps might very well be a similar situation, that in some instances it creates a pleasing rather than annoying kind of noise.

why not build two and use diferent caps? or sub them?

Caps are cheap
try it out
don't believe all that you read on the web.

There are all kinds of ceramics try them and find out for yourself.

Whats that DIY up top?

I hear differences with certain caps: However like the CC voltage effect  location in the circuit  and what voltages make a difference.

Caps are cheap Caps are cheap Caps are cheap Caps are cheap Caps are cheap Caps are cheap Caps are cheap Caps are cheap

buy some and try them.

Maybe not the answer you wanted but maybe the best way to learn and test what you read on the web.

Well, the reason I'm asking is that I'm thinking of getting a BYOC Phase 90 kit, they have a "block-logo" Phase 90, which probably has better quality caps and then there's this "script-logo" Phase 90 kit which has a Texas intruments UA741CP op amp, carbon comp resistors, and some NOS ceramic disc caps.(This Script-Logo kit is actually $10.00 more then the "Block-Logo" kit)

I was debating which one to order.

Thanks for all your responses people!

I have a Dunlop 3 opamp one that I converted to what I think is the script cct. (from sites like Tonepad, etc. plus pics of script versions), and seeing the ceramic discs in the old ones, I tried some cheap ones for the .047-.05uFs (I measured them to try to get the same capacitance as the originals), and I liked the original monolithic ones better. It can be subjective so, i agree that the best thing to do is to try them.
