Ive been thinking of how to do a simple, smooth volume swell effect, and this is what Ive come up with:

Could you set up an LED so that the guitar signal amplitude determined the brightness [with no signal being totally dark] and optocouple it with a photo resistor, and since the photo resistor would have a slight delay in responding to the changes in light, as it approached its light resistance the resistance would decrease and let more of the signal through, causing the volume to swell up slightly after the note is picked? Although im not sure how long the delay with photoresistors is, I know it varies but I assumed its in the 600+ ms range, and hopefully not less than that because then the effect would not be very noticeable.

I wouldnt even know where to start with a schematic for this, but, thats why im asking.

I was thinking of something like this just earlier today...

I'd say, use an envelope follower to drive the LED or so, and then just hook up an LDR to a variable gain boost or something like that.

I'm not very familiar with LDR response times, but you could probably look at some datasheets to find one that would suit your needs.

Doesn't the Boss Slow Gear do something along these lines?
