That's the way RG explained it here, and my simulator agrees. Not that there's anything wrong with using the body diode - I think I remember Aron saying he preferred it to the "correct" connection.

Hey, dano12!
r u sure that teh c3 iz .01uF?

Wow guys, thanks very much for the feedback. Here's v1.1 of the schematic. Still hasn't made it to the breadboard yet...

JHS: A small limiting resistor between Vr1 and C3 , app. 2,2k-4,7k, would be a good idea to prevent sqealing when the gain pot is maxed.
I don't think it needs a recovery stage, the VL OD produce a lot output vol.,  but I would alter the cap values a bit, it's s overdrive not a tube preamp. The frequency response of the circuit is limited by the RC-networks in the FB-loops to 5kHz. so the access frequency of the treble pot seems to be a bit to high. The tone stack blocks all DC so I would drop C11. I would add a buffer before the tone stack and increase the cap values by factor 10 and decrease the pot values by factor ten.

All changes made except the buffer. How would that help?

Mark Hammer: Far from not needing the recovery amp, I suspect you'll need to up the gain on the recovery amp a bit, given the amount of passive loss the tonestack will produce.  You'd like to be able to get some appreciable output level at any and all tone settings without having to dime the gain control, so I suspect that raising the gain in stage 2 by dropping the value of R10 might be called for.  Try 22k instead.  That will give you a gain of 7.8 instead of 4.2.  Not a huge leap but a help just the same.  If that ain't enough, then 18k oughta do it.
I love it! I can use the existing opamp stage 2 for gain recovery instead of having to tack something additional on the end.

lovekraft0: Don't know if it was deliberate or not, but the way you've got the MOSFETs oriented, you're clipping the body diode, not the MOSFET - you'll need to reverse the polarity of the 1N34s if you want the MOSFET to clip.
Still researching R.G.'s post on MOSFET clippers with the body diode. My schematic uses the Shaka version. I'll try both variations on the breadboard.

anti-idiot: nice, but dont forget the resistor between Vr1 and C3.
done

Constantin Necrasov: r u sure that teh c3 iz .01uF?
Sure enough! Good catch.

Over here our interpretation is 'pawned'.

In my experience, the common usage seems to be "p-own-ed," rather than "p-awn-ed" or "pooned."  This seems most fitting, considering its derivation from misspelling "own."

Using the Mosfet/GE clipping offers an opportunity to switch to several variations.  GE/Body Diode, GE/Mosfet, GE, Body Diode, Body Diode/Mosfet, etc.  Also, might try different Mosfets.   :icon_cool:

Suggestions for MOSFETs other than the IRF520s I've been using?

Thx!

Is it pronounced pawned?

P-OWN-D

as in loaned.

Different generations, different meanings. :icon_cool:

a term used primarily in the Internet gaming culture, means to soundly defeat an opponent. It is sometimes used for taunting of an in-game enemy, and rubbing in victories.

Yeah I guess.  :icon_confused:
Whatever happened to just "kicking Ass"?  :icon_lol:

LOL, I think you guys are reading way too much into this.

I don't think it matters if it's "powned", "pawned", or "pwned" everyone still knows what you're talking about. It's internet slang guys, it's not rocket science.

I guess it's like the "Blue Clipper" or anything with the term "clipper".
"The EVIL Clipper" -or- "Tone Clipper" -or- "Magic Clipper"
Those always get a chuckle from me.
I'll bet none of ya can guess why??  :icon_lol:

Yeah, I started out with a working title of STFUNOOB but I figured that wouldn't work out to well. :)

Gonna build it over the xmas break.

Whatever happened to just "kicking Ass"?  :icon_lol:

The human kind were led to understanding that simply kicking something would be extremely barbarous and not suited to today's erudite society. With the widespread capitalistic economy these days and the evergrowing real estate market, owning something would be way more profitable.

Anyone fancy disputing my philosophy? :icon_cool:
