Hey folks!

Haven't been here in a fair while so i'm not sure if this is old hat around these parts, but here's a guitar player article I stumbled across by chance. It's just one of those silly "top 50" type things, but who knows, it may be of some interest:

Cheers...

I dont know if it was the first altogether, but I believe that the maestro fuzz-tone was the first commercially available distortion device available.

"Volume pedals have been available since before the [sic] World War II. Probably one of the earliest true effect pedals would be the DeArmond Tremolo Control introduced  in the late 1940s. It had a unique way of creating a tremolo effect--a small canister filled with 'hydro fluid' was shaken by a motor. As the fluid shook in the canister, signal would alternately pass and go to ground, creating a tremolo effect. To give contrast, a low-frequency oscillator created the tremolo effect in blackface Fender amps" ("Ask Zac," Vintage Guitar, Dec, 2006, p. 20).

Seemed like "a little while ago" to me too, but it's been two and a half years!

Little Steven Van Zandt did a segment on the early history of fuzz on his Underground Garage radio show. The earliest example he could trace was a bass using one in a country song. He said that record producers were always looking for a gimmick sound, and they probably expected that the fuzz pedal would be good for a few songs. After the L.A. producers used it in a few more songs, Jack Nitzsche met the Stones, and gave Keef a pedal. They re-recorded the intro to Satisfaction with the fuzz, and the rest was history.

Nice gimmick!

I think it was Mark Hammer who had the COMPLETELY INSANE amount of pedals in the "pictures" thread.  I think the pic in question has since disappeared, though.

The phrase "pedal whore" comes to mind when you see it.  trust me.

This is the "Building your own stompbox" forum. The linked article has nothing to do with building effects or contain any information on electronics that could be used for building effects. It is still an interesting tidbit so I believe it should not be deleted but moved to the lounge as that is what the lounge is for. Also it was considered lounge material before so I don't know why it would not be considered as such now.

I don't know if it still exists in that thread, but I had it saved from a while ago:

Jeeze- I thought I had too many pedals... But that's cool. Some of those enclosures look pretty interesting. Those old modem/hard drive cases look better than I would have expected!
