Tube reamer mod question: MORE compression WITHOUT more distortion?

Can this be achieved?. In my eternal look for the overdrive that suits my needs, I've decided to breadboard a tube reamer as it's a fairly simple circuit, just to try some tweaks, one of them being actually more compression. I'm not looking for more gain as I have other pedals for that. I guess I'll have to tweak around the clipping section,

Is it unavoidable more compression=more gain?

Might try using Mosfet clippers instead of standard diodes.  They compress more before clipping.

Can I use BS170's for that? I don't have any IRF510-520.......

Yes, but the clipping threshold will be fairly high, over 2 volts.  Could be just right.  Supertex has some that might work better for you.

How about using leds as clipping diodes and then wire a LDR parallel to those clipping diodes. Then set the leds and the LDR face to face and put them in to a light proof container.

I have tried this with some other opamp feedback clipping circuit and if I remember correctly it worked at least some way. In my circuit the opamp was in inverting configuration though. It was years ago and I never really refined the circuit (and I have disassembled it as it was just an experiment).

Different leds an especially different LDR's will give different results ofcource.
